You hit maximum depth at around 4 1/2 or 5 on the Sens. dail. Any higher, and you "widen" out the field at the bottom of the field. This is helpful for clean, large areas where there are deep targets. However, Tom Dankowski has mentioned many times that in junky areas, you want to hunt at no more that 4 1/2 - 5 (on the analog machines, 4 on the digital CZ's), as this gives you maximum depth, but the field is extremely small at the bottom end. You have to move forward slowly, and greatly overlap your swings to effectively search for deep targets in junky areas.
I had always learned that you can, yes, GB a CZ at any Sens. setting. However, if you GB with the Sens at say, 4, and then go into a really clean area and bump it up to 7, your detector will then become unstable. It's better to GB the unit with a really high Sens, then turn it down to where the unit is stable, and you'll still have a properly-tuned detector.
