Help skunked by a Whites & ready to sell

You may INDEED have a bad coil if it's sounding out when you bump it against something. But I PROMISE you that your Explorer will relic hunt with the best of the best, even when equipted with the stock 10" coil. You may want to do a RESET on your Explorer by pulling the battery out while it's powering up during the tones (before) the final screen settles in just for peace of mind.
I have an extra 8" coil that will bark out different tones when bumped lightly against a tree root or whatever and I simply don't use it anymore although it will still find multiple goodies. It just seems that once it gets bumped and sounds off, it starts getting unstable and the crosshairs and tones start going crazy no matter how low I run the sensitivity, noise cancel or whatever !!! For what it's worth, I hunt with several Whites owners and I often hit DEEP 3 ringers with my stock 10" coil that their Whites can't even get a tone on and they hit as a STRONG silver hit; no iffy signal about it.
Well ... thats my TCW ... hope it helps .. H.H. <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> Mike

my little Brother. He told me he was going to Antetium with an Explorer user. He's tough compitition when it comes to relics and has one of the best collections you'll ever see. He knows Whites machines as well as anyone I know. I have been swinging an XS for a year now and just bought an MXT as a back up, I think I have a great arsenal now. The XS will find relics but I don't think as well as the MXT. A lot of people will disagree but since having the MXT and hunting pounded XS areas here in IL. I have found about a dozen mini balls, a shield nickel and a V nickel and a couple Indians but it's no Minelab. Ask Bruce to show you his coin collection, he doesn't have much of one. Most XS users have real nice coin collections. Not all machines for all purposes. The XS is still my #1 machine but the MXT is nice too.

The MXT is a great detector, but no Minelab. I have them both and the Shadow X5 and use them for differnt areas. I have used my MXT while my hunting partners use a Explorer and blew them away in some areas, but when we get to the older worked out areas the Explorer will walk all over my MXT.
The MXT is a faster detector, but for target seperation and depth the Explorer will eat it up while the MXT in cleaner areas and not much trash it will get the coins that are not that deep so much faster than my Explorer.
I had this one boulavard to detect that was 10 feet by 100 feet so I went over it with the MXT with the stock coil, turned up the gain to max and went over again, put on the 5X10 coil and went over it again. I got coins each time, but when I couldnt get anymore I took the Explorer over it and was surpried at how mwny deeper coins and coins that were next to trash I missed with the MXT. One I even got a signal with the Explorer and took out the MXT and tried it with the 5X10 coil and got no signal, when dug was a 1909 VBD penny right beside the sidewalk at 9-10 inches deep.
I think the Explorer and the MXT you have will make a combo.
I also feel those with the Shadow X5 and the Explorers have a deadly pair too.
Each detector has it own strong point, but have never seen a detector that can beat the Explorer for deep coins or those close to trash once you have the right setting and know how to use it, but the X5 is close while the MXT is a faster detector and get more in the areas that are not real trashy or the targets not super deep.
Good luck
Rick

Hi Bryan, yes it was Bruce he told me about you, nice to meet you. I did see the collection. I had a good time with him and he knows his area. Ask him about the deer. I have since talked with an XS hunter in my area he said the X12 coil is a good coil but that I was running it to high and that is what will cause the false signals I was getting. This is what was driving me nuts on Saturday. I still would like to go again. I just want a machine that works correctly. I am going to hook up with this guy and test my unit and hopfully get some pointers.

Thanks Mike. I spoke with a XS hunter in the area and he believes that I was running the coil to high on the sens. We are going to get together some time and hopefully I'll get the idea with this unit.

He's made me look like I don't know what I'm doing more then once while hunting, but if you ask him to park hunt, he would just as soon watch, he really likes those relics. I have my MXT now and will be in PA, ready to hunt on the 25th. I'm getting in on the 24th, hunt some on the 25th, head to NC for a couple days, back to PA on the 28th try to hunt some on the 29th back to IL on the 30th. Kind of a whirl-wind trip but I need to get home once in a while. Maybe you can come down to Bruces on the 25th or 29th and we'll see what we can scrape up and compare notes on the XS.

Hi Dan dont give up yet, If you have the stock 10 1/2 coil, put it back on. Upstate Jim is right about runnin a wider Iron Mask, I run wide open at -16 in ferrous tone & I run my gain 8-9 depending on the ground & sensitivity as high as I can go 24-32 in manual & keep a steady threshold,Iron will be Low tone & if you hear any change in tone STOP & check if you get a weak hit that is 2 ways or doesnt move like hotrocks will, dig a plug & check again YOU will be suprized how deep the XS will go!!! I have dug bullets where only the crosshairs moved & made a slight blip sound & recoverd the target at 20+"!!!! I have a week old MXT & I'm going to sell it, keep the Explorer & forget about the Whites. you already have The Best & Deepest machine out there!!!! Good-Luck &HH Chris
