Help skunked by a Whites & ready to sell

This weekend I went to Antietem and hunted with a guy that has been hunting the area for thirteen years. We hunted for about 5 hours and I found 1 three ringer, 5 shotgun shells and some other junk. He found a shell fragment and 10 three ringers and 3 round balls. Not good for a two hour drive one way and 5 hours of hunting. He was useing a new (two weeks old) Whites MXT. I have had my XS for about a year and a half. I got it because they say it is the best. This was my first time out relic hunting and I thought I would come home with more. I was running IM -10. Manual sens. at 19. I had the X-12 coil on the machine. What is wrong? I know the shell frag would not hit because of the IM. But when I set the IM -16 and tested mini ball and button he brought for me to try, they it far left so I went back to -10. I also was getting a upper right hit like silver when the coil hit something like a grass clump, tree branch or a rock. I also had the coil on the ground and wiggled the upper shaft with the coil not moving on the ground and got a silver hit/ring. I switched coils today and I did not have any of that with the stock coil. Also, I have not been finding all the silver and old coins that the others post that they find with the XS. What is wrong? I have a test garden. I set the machine up like everyone else. I am ready to sell. Please help.

Dan;
Sounds like you may have a bad coil.
How long have you been using the x-12?
should not be getting contact falsing.
check to see if you have some contamination under the coil cover. Most common in beach hunting with black sand under the coil cover but can sometimes happen elsewhere. see if you get the same falsing when you wiggle the wire where it inserts into the coil. if you do may have a broken wire.
have not done any relic hunting to know just where to expect hits. from what I understand the MXT is an awsome relic machine.
Ask on the Relic forum about settings from the guys that are doing it all the time.
Good luck
Rick (TN)

Do you have the X1 probe on? If so check both cable connections.. the coil and the one that attaches to the control box.. If you do not have the probe, then make sure you check the connection at the control box.. maybe it was loose.. if it still does it sounds like your coil might have gone bad.. Hunting relics you should run a bit more wide open in iron mask.. at least down to the -14 range.. use ferrous audio.. most iron will hit with a low tone.. dig everything that gives a hint of a solid higher tone.. Forget the meter readings unless you get a high tone that reads solid right bottom.. any thing that jumps intermittantly over there should be dug though...
Depending on the ground you might even try auto sense if in red or orange clay.. other than that use manual in the 20-24 range. If lots of iron around use fast response

I don't know the answer as I do not relic hunt, but I would think the XS not a great choice since you cannot run it in "ALL METAL". White's machines have a great AM mode. If you are going to dig all metal as one typically would in a relic field, why bother with a disc mode?

The xs is nothing short of incredible on relics. Iron relics aren't of interest to me so a true all metal mode is not neccessary. That being said, I would imagine the xs would have great depth on iron should I choose to want to find it. I have had my explorer for 2.5 years now and wouldn't trade it for for all the other detectors on the market combined.

you can't really expect to go to a new place that you have never hunted before and expect to find as much as someone who has been hunting it for 13 years and knows the ground and the area.
I bought an X12 when they came out. I hated it instantly. I emailed the dealer 3 or 4 hours after it was delivered wanting my money back and they wouldn't even talk to me about it. I sent it in thinking it was faulty and it checked out fine. It is no stock coil, period. It would false, sound way different than the stock coil and not get signals as good as the stock coil. A few ounces less weight was not worth it to me. It found a new home and I lost my a$$! Very bad taste in my mouth still from that whole ordeal.
If you have had an explorer that long and are not getting good results I would strongly suggest you take a drive somewhere and meet up with someone on the forum to compare some signals with. You obviously are not hearing them or digging iffy enough signals or something. Unless your detector or coil is faulty. I doubt that but you never know til you hunt next to another explorer.

I had an explorer for two years and finally dumped it for a DFX. With help from my dealer on settings I am finding much the explorer cound not find and not half the hassel. Dump the aussie junk and get a white or fisher.

Go to a good multiline dealer and test your explorer against a few of the top american made detectors. See for yourself if the explorer is as good or better than than the american made products then go from there. If you try to get advice on a forum you will find they are loyal to their brand weather they are good or not. As I said don't take my word go to dealer and compare for yourself. Then BUY AMERICAN>

takes a relic to find a relic, explorer should be good, if it isn't over dix or seven inches deep.

Coil is only 1 month old. Nothing under the cover. I will have to check the wire. Thanks.

Yes, X-1 is on and the cable connections are good. Why auto in clay? Thanks for the other info.

Sorry Ric 13 years or 1 hour I should have done better. Everyone is saying this machine is the best and will blow the others away. I am reading and trying hard with no real results. Thank you for you other info on the iffy signals.

Thanks for your input. What are you useing and what kind of depth are you getting? I hear so many good things about the XS that I got to believe I just find it hard that I am not getting better results. I know a Whites user that went to the N/S hunt and told me about a XS user that found 3 or 4 buckles in one hole at 16 inches and then went another foot and found another.
