HELP! racer vs at pro vs fors core

New member
Ok im brand new to this forum and md'ing and need yalls help. This seems to be the very best place to network and everyone is so knowledgeable so please help me.
This will be my first machine and originally was considering $300 range but then decided to up it to $600 range so I could learn with the machine and "grow with it". So as the title implies I have it down to the Racer and AT Pro. Mainly hunting relics and coins. I live in a CW historic area so it is heavily detected as well. Here's is my debate:

AT Pro: reportedly easy to learn and use. Good depth with pro modes. Its waterproof which means for me in a heavily hunted area I couldm hit the creeks and shallow river and possibly give me an edge. Also this is a time tested and proven machine. I honestly cant find any negatives or cons.

Racer: intentionally placed this thread in this section for yalls expertise on this machine. obviously this is an awesome machine with "cutting edge" features. What appeals to me is depth, recovery, and discrimination. As the AT would give me an edge with water use I feel Racer has the land edge due to depth. As I will be mainly on land. What does concern me is the complaints or breaking coils and bolts. I also hesitate due to it being a new machine we dont know yet any potential weakness this machine may end up having.

Fors Core: I wasn't originally considering this machine but as I was researching the racer obviously this machine is coming up.I like that technology is similar to the racer but it has epoxy coils that are reportedly heavier duty. I think it may be a little more complicated but I feel id learn any machine I purchase. I honestly due like the AT and Racer display as I feel being new having a visually aid would help me alot.

The soil in the area im in is fairly mineralized and red clay.I believe I've covered most everything. Please give me honest feedback and pros and cons if possible. THANKS! happy to be in this community.

*sorry for grammar or spelling issues typing on cellphone isn't the easiest

this is no help but i have the racer and the at pro and i dont know which i like best.maybe i will in a few months.
you can water hunt with both as you said shallow, you can get the coil under water but dont go so deep you get the control box wet on the racer.i'm sure you will like either.

You need the small coi no matter what

Thanks for the quick replies!

Tinusbum: please keep us updated on your findings. Hopefully ill order one within a week or two but im still curious or how they compare.

Lowbrow: I agree with needing a small coil. Whichever one I pick if I dont buy a bundle including a sniper coil then I will be purchasing one separate. Thanks for the advice.

This forum has so many experts I know yall know both of these machines. Keep suggestions and opinions coming please.

Alright, I'm over East of Knoxville and been asking about the Racer and T2. You might look up DanielTN. He lives over close to the middle and east line and has a lot of experience with various detectors.

I am over here in W Tn and have hunted numerous times with the A T Pro in the Nashville area and it runs great in that dirt and mine here. The water proof aspect is a real plus along with its solid target i d. I can't speak for the Racer, but one other consideration would be a version5 or 6 Omega 8000. Excellent coin hunter and its in your price range. Good luck with your decision. HH jim tn

I bought a racer about three wk's ago, an I hunted some of my hunted out c w camp site & found relic could'vt beleave these relic was miss by other detector. I never hunted with a a t pro , put have some hunting buddy that use them $ they like them. I like a light machine an a t pro is heavy then a racer. I have three metal detectors , a Minelap x-terra & fisher gold bug pro. An these or all great detectors. I was going too order just the $649 racer , put went ahead an bought the pro pack that come with small coil &. Other stuff, glad I did the small coil great in trash place's. I been metaldetecting for 43 yr's.

Awesome insight from all!

Jim tn: how was your depth in our wonderful clay soil?

Main concern of the racer: breaking bolts and coils reportedly cracking VERY easily

I have used my brothers AT Pro numerous times, and I own a Racer. The AT Pro sure is simple and I believe a nice and proven detector that is waterproof. But I give the edge to the Racer over the AT Pro as it is also very simple and I think has an edge in raw performance. I believe there are going to be some problems on almost any new release of a detector. I have not had any problems with my unit and I was among the first to get the consumer batch in the states. No coil or bolt issues (knock on wood) - and I bang that coil around pretty good. Quality wise my experience has been A+ with Racer. Also I believe they have solved those bolt/coil ear problems with future shipments. I would highly recommend the racer in bang for the buck category. With that said the AT Pro is a great proven machine - I have used both, prefer the racer for inland hunting just because of raw power. Others will disagree. - For Racer I would go with standard pack and forgo the t-shirt, cap, and small coil (for now)in order to see if you like it first then add on later. just my 2 cents

Thanks jdeiana that's exactly the kind of review im looking for. Good to hear they addressed the coil ear and bolt issue so quickly. It seems even people who do encounter issues with hardware that Makro has has awesome service.

In damp conditions, 9" on a 10 year test garden buried dime. Dry conditions, a little less. Now, its not going to blow your head phones off, but with careful listening one would dig the target. HH jim tn

Was hoping Monte would find this thread and chimes in. He really seems to have excellent insight and knowledge.

Here's my video in my yard with the Racer and small coil. The stock coil is a little better for depth but you still need to be aware that the deeper coins/relics will read totally as iron beyond a certain depth point.

Ok good to know Daniel Tn. Do u have any experiance with the AT? What part of Tn are you in? Im near Murfreesboro.

I've never owned the CoRe but I have owned the Racer and currently the AT Pro.

Right off the bat let me suggest if you're new to detecting the AT Pro would be the better choice. The Racer is a great detector but not as easy to grasp as the AT Pro.

Depth wise I'd say they are very close. Of course depending on conditions. The Racer has the faster recovery, which is best in high trash conditions, and the AT Pro is more stable. I felt the AT Pro was more sensitive to gold than the Racer. Either one would make a good choice for what you need.
