I stopped on the way home from camping to swing the explorer at a known and well hunted Florida Seminole Indian War fort site. I only had one hour. I dug a deep musket ball on the first signal. I swung all over, lots of signals I could not get to repeat, I dug at least six targets that disappeared on me. I was surprised to dig two percussion caps (very small item) with the large coil on. I am still having trouble pinpointing. I often get a clear deep target and when I switch to pinpoint mode....nothing. What gives? I was hunting in Iron Mask at -12 tones set to conductive and gain at 8. Suggestions appreciated.

Mike,
The signals that you dug and found nothing could have been a halo from an iron object that has completely rusted away. When you disturb the halo the signal is gone. The no pinpoint question could be a large target off to the side. Do a big circle around where the suspected target is and check to see if your detector nulls. Also make sure you don't have the coil over the target when you go into pinpoint. Pinpointing takes practice the method I use is to position the coil right over the target strongest signal. Keep the coil there and rotate 90 degrees move the coil again to the strongest signal the target should be right below the sticker on the stock coil. Hope I was of some help.

I know how frustrating that can be to dig a deep hole only to find nothing.
