Help II

Thanks in advance all. Rookie here-

I picked up this hobby a month ago and bought a V3. So far, I'm finding lots of clad, but it's all coming in at 4 3/4 inches or less. Can someone guide me towards deeper targets? I know this machine can dive deep so it's obviously on me. I need some training.

Thanks!!

Shep- Research, Research, Research! Older spots have deeper targets. I like old parks for silver coins. But I have found silver in the 3-5" range, including a walking liberty half dollar at 4 inches, and I have found clad coins at 9 inches. When I hunt for deep silver coins I use the "HI PRO" program in 2.5 kHz.
It goes pretty deep! But when it comes to the V3 I think we are all rookies at this point.

Good luck
Steve

Check your swing speed, and check your program. I've found coins at 8 inches in the stock coin and jewelry program, and they sing out just like the shallow ones. Also consider the area you're hunting. There is one place I hunt that I haven't found much but clad, and rarely deeper than four or five inches. I don't know why -- maybe there was fill dirt brought in years ago, or something. But it doesn't bother me because I know the V can punch deeper, and has proven itself at other sites. So will yours.

I have to agree with you Steve, we are all rookies on this one and not all old silver is deep either. Many of the private property spots Nancy and I hunt, the silver could be at any depth if it hasn't been hunted before. Location, location, location.

Take it easy let all the excitement relax in you silver will come when you dont think about it
also silver will come deep and shallow so dig everything

Hi Shep

I Just posted something similar not to long ago, I have about 50 ( probably 200 hours if you include bench testing and poking around with the settings ) hours on my V in the field so I am no expert but as time goes on it just keeps getting better, you made a great choice with the V. The one thing I learned from suggestions on this and a couple of the other forums was dig lots of trash  it will in help your learning curve I promise !!. I have found about 16 pieces of silver at this point and most were in the 4 inch range so your location helps a lot, if you are finding a lot of pennies from the silver age keep on searching as the silver should be there and at a similar depth. Hope this helps ?.

It's funny but in some ground coins just don't end up deep. I started as a kid in the early 70's. I had the opportunity to go back and hunt the same dirt. Same type of coins at possibly....maybe....only a little deeper. (I went back with a PI to make sure I was hitting it all...I was.) That would not be true in areas that have a lot of freeze/thaw, heavy annual dust movement, etc. To my surprise, there also was almost no additional loam due to leaf build up. Things are different in the east, heavy organic dark soil and in heavily used ground that has build up. Most silver I find is less than six inches...same as when I was wet behind the ears (and digging absolutely everything).

One thing to do...when you first get to a location, settle in and dig it all/deep for a bit to see what the ground sinking/build characteristics are for item penetration. This will help you make a call on what to expect with target depth.

If it's not there, it's not there, or...it most likely will be there after you learn a bit more or...if we beat you to it....so solly cholly. (Unlikely on the last one!) Glad to hear you have a V as your first! A blank slate can be the best start of all!

Well your only going to go as deep as the next piece of metal lies you cant go around it. You can find yourself in a park with absolutely no trash and you will hit targets as deep as the machine is capable of however in most parks and the like there is not a way around the trash so in reality your doing ok. I've hit privet houses and pulled great silver at 10inches but I also didn't have a great deal of trash around also keep in mind not all old coins are deep at all. I hit a Virgin park and all the old silver and old coins was at 2 inches deep, halves, barbers. mercs, foreign coins, large copper, all at 2 inches.

The only way to clear a park to get deep is to dig, dig, and dig. Once you have done that then open the machine up using programs like you have in your V3. The Hi pro worked well for me a few weeks ago in a park I cleaned out still they hit at 4-5 inches. Your not doing anything wrong except blaming yourself bottom line is you have to get past the next level of trash once you do that run the machine hot and see whats down there:detecting:
