Hello, New to The Forum - Question on Pin-Pointers

I also use a SunRay inline probe on my DFX,its a quality item and should last a lifetime, only down side its teathered to just the one machine and that is its biggest downfall if you can call it one.

Just bought a UniProbe once again that is the one with the PI electronics mounted in the headphones, not used it yet but have always wanted to try one,so after doing alot of research and homework on this Probe i finally decided to hit the 'BUY' button, expensive 'yes' especially when importing one from the US across the pond to the UK,but should last years and the biggest bonus is that it can be used on most machines. But i mainly wanted to hook it upto my Pulse machine for deep hoard hunting and i am pretty certain in saying that the UniProbe is probably the deepest one going,of course i stand to be corrected.

For everyday use the Garrett PP is the all time favourite but i always have a Whites BullsEye as a backup just incase, but the main feature of the Garrett is the way the sound increases the nearer the target,i will agree that other's have the same facility but the Garret just ticks the boxes for everyday use.

I would be totally lost without a pinpointer probe these days,of course years ago i had to use the traditional method but in my mind a probe is a vital part of detecting equipment.

Of course no single probe as yet is perfect or ticks all the boxes but over the last few years a few very good ones including waterproof ones have appeared from Europe, this can only mean good news for us detectorists.

Do yourself a favor and get the waterproof one from Makro. Granted it just came out and I personally have only used mine once so far (yesterday, worked awesome!) I can tell you this for sure, the Turkish pointer companies seem to stand behind their warranty 100%! Nokta actually found a post of mine on garys where I had talked about basically Frankensteining their pointer with a toggle switch etc. because the slide switch kept packing full of mud making it useless after the 3rd or 4th plug when it was raining out. The man was in Turkey and actually chimed in on the thread and said they wanted to give me a brand new one. I emailed the ser. # to their sales mgr. and he replied back within 15min. and said even though it was out of the 2yr warr. and I bought it 2nd hand (feebay) to send my address and they would send me a new one. I'll be damned if I didn't have it in 2 days from Istanbul! :super: and I got to keep the old one! I think Makro and Nokta share technology also, some of the sounds it makes are the same too, like when you change sense etc. Reason will tell you that at some point, it's going to be raining and your going to want to detect. Or, you're going to be walking by the edge of some water and start thinking; Wonder what could be in there? AND the most important part of pinpointers.........for godssakes, stay completely away from a Chinese pointer co. called "Metal Probe".......... you would be better off wearing a tinfoil hat and poking the ground with a coat hanger. ;)

I have used several whites bullsye , garrett pro pointer, pistol probe, and the whites TRX, I prefer the whites TRX, because it is deep and has 4 gain levels. my next choice is the Garrett, if it was easear to super tune the garret i would like it just the same , I did not like the pistol prob after a wile because it would ignore foil, and was a bit to bulky if garret ever gets a fast way to super tune the pro pointer that would be great but for now the TRX has me finding things faster and making less mess of the grass. whatever you choose I hope you are happy with it and Good hunting

I like the fact that the TRX has good depth and will use AA and 9 volt batteries. But I don't like it not having side detection and from what I understand poor lighting.

Yep. Nice area for detecting. I go through there on the way to Boone, NC.

It would depend on how much you want to spend and what you expect out of one. I don't consider myself a "professional" detectorist. It's a hobby for me,whether I find something or not. I did my searching and bought an XPointer. Cheaper? Yes. Chinese? Yes. But distributed by Golddiggers in the US. Could it break? Sure. I've seen posts with broken Garretts, Whites, etc as well. The Deteknix XPointer does just as good a job as any pinpointer, and mine has served me well. It does not false at all, no matter the pushing or thumping. It detects a good 2". Of course if you plan on diving or using it underwater, I would suggest the units that cost twice as much because they are waterproof. It's all up to what you want it to do. Here is a great video on the Xpointer, Propointer and TRX. It is long but worth it. At the end, this guy shows a problem with the TRX that could be a problem (about 37 mins into the video).

Don't shoot the messenger. I just saw the XPointer as the better of the three, and for $90, a great deal.

Hightone,

Good information, Long but a Great Video! Turns out that this guy is a dealer but is more than fair on his review of all three pin-pointers. He researches like I do, with charts and grafts. Not having these pin pointers in my hot hand to try myself I can only go on the personal experience of other users, that's what so great about a forum. So until someone can show me different based on the type of detection I do, the features plus the value for your dollar, I"m currently leaning towards the X-pointer.

Drop that x pointer in a mud puddle and I think you'll notice an immediate $35 difference from the Makro. ;) Good luck huntn down the goods with whatever you choose.

What is it about the X-pointer that you don't like?

Well... #1.It's not waterproof, and B ;).......There's that whole Chinese factor.....I've dealt with that, and the 4th ;) and final reason, for me was when I found out that they had issues picking up gold? I saw it in a video on a forum and read where several people had the same results during air tests on chains and smaller gold pieces where it didn't sound off at all or a very minor chirp every once in awhile. That's 5 ;) good reasons why the Makro is a superior choice for an extra $35, for me anyways..

In this area the lack of side detection is a blessing. I have a lot of trouble finding black clad coins in black soil. Using the PP I rake the dirt around and move the target without ever knowing where it is. I have not used the Whites TRX yet simply because I have 2 old Bullseye Pointers amd a PP. Moneywise it just don't make sense to buy anouther one.

I was aware of the fact that it was not water proof and that's not a concern for me. And I knew it was made in China but has a distributor in the USA, so hopefully the distributor will back up their 2 year warranty which is the same warranty as most pin-pointers. Not picking up gold is a concern for me. Would you happen to know where I could find that video or the discussion about not recognizing gold?

Thanks!

I hope it's ok to post this here since it's not my video but here goes. lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cw9T963cwBY&feature=youtu.be

Your Right! That is certainly something to be concerned about. Is it just small pieces of gold or larger pieces as well? Could there be something wrong with that Xpointer or not set up properly? Maybe it has a preset discriminator.

Does other Pin Pointers detune like the TRX?

Thanks again

My Makro and Nokta RS both detune. As for the gold I think it's just smaller pieces but I read several comments about others having the same issue but hopefully others will chime in that have tried the same test.

Does your Makro pick up the small pieces of gold?

yes it does, my Nokta does as well.

I found this Video test titled: Gold Nugget & Civil War Button in Mineralized Dirt Using a Garrett Pro Pointer, Minelab Pro-Find & Whites X-Pointer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvmaoifmUpI

It shows using a small (.3 gram) gold nugget and a Civil War coat button in heavily mineralized dirt to see if the new X-Pointer pulse induction pinpointing probe can hear these in this harsh dirt any better than the industry standard probes.

Looks hopeful for the X-Pointer in this demo picking up small gold nuggets. Like to have seen your Makro in this test.

Really?

Nothing against anyone or any PPer. I like the Makro, but since I don't water hunt, the little buttons in the back seem harder to operate on the fly with gloves on than the others. And since it's made in Turkey, are they any better than the Chinese for electronics? Gold Digger Innovative Products are the distriburors of the XPointer and NEL coils in the US. And they have their own forum slot here on Finds. So you are promoting a dealer/distributor as well. If something messes up with my XPointer due to cheapness, my next choice would be the Makro. Until then, it has served me well and does a great job for my hunting style.

I just ordered a 580 probe, 100ft waterproof. I like the idea of probing under Creek rocks . there was very little info anywhere and I was iffy but got it through Amazon warehouse open box for $40 less, I'll give it a go and always have the option of return, how is it on small gold? Anyone had there hands on one?
