Hello, New to The Forum - Question on Pin-Pointers

SpencerHouse

New member
Hello, New to the Forum.

After 10 years, have decided to dust off the my detectors and get back into the game if my legs will allow it.

Many new accessories have been introduced to the hobby since I last dug coins, like the pin pointers. I can recall being frustrated many times trying to find where that signal disappeared.

I have found a dozen or more pin pointers on the market but the Garrett Pro-Pointer seems to be the pointer of choice. However the Mako Waterproof pin pointer appears to have just been introduced and could give the Garrett Pro some competition. Has anyone used it and could you compare it to Garrett's Pro?

P.S.
I have really been enjoying the YouTube video's now available on Detectors/Accessories reviews and the treasure hunts themselves, Wow!. They can really get a body charged up. With winter coming on here in East Tennessee, it might be all that I have to look forward to till spring gets here!!!! The use of small video cameras have left nothing to the imagination. It's almost like "being there" when that glint of silver appears in the hole.

SpencerHouse,
Welcome to the forum
You can check out some of others out there but the Garrett Pro-Pointer is a good one. When you make up your mind on one, buy from a good detector dealer, there are some Chinese knockoffs out there that aren't worth 2 cents.

What detector or detectors will you be using?

Ron in WV

I have the Garrett Pro Pointer and White's TRX, love both but the Pro Pointer has been retired as a back-up. I really like the TRX.

Compare to the detector pro pistol probe. I have been using one regularly for five years with no problems. It is adjustable for depth and has no problem finding targets at six inches and you don't have to do all the ramming and naming around in the hole or dirt to locate your target like everybody seems to have to do with the garret. Welcome back to the most addictive hobby in the world! HH Ed in co.

Thanks Ron,
Your right about knockoffs and it's in anything anymore.

I'm currently using a Fisher CZ-5 manufactured in Los Banos CA.. And a Tesoro Bandito II.

I have used several whites bullsye , garrett pro pointer, pistol probe, and the whites TRX, I prefer the whites TRX, because it is deep and has 4 gain levels. my next choice is the Garrett, if it was easear to super tune the garret i would like it just the same , I did not like the pistol prob after a wile because it would ignore foil, and was a bit to bulky if garret ever gets a fast way to super tune the pro pointer that would be great but for now the TRX has me finding things faster and making less mess of the grass. whatever you choose I hope you are happy with it and Good hunting

I just finished watching 3 YouTube Videos on the TRX and must say was impressed with it's features. Will add it to my short list. Thanks for the tip.

I just watched this YouTube Video comparing the Pistol Probe with the Garret Pro & Whites Bullseye II on a deep target that turned out to be a 1782 Silver Two Real Colonial Coin. Very impressive! Not sure if I like the Tone it makes, sounds like a detectors in all metal mode, which could be good. I would have liked to see what the Whites Bullseye TRX would have done on that target.

The more I research I do on the Whites TRX the more respect I'm gaining for it. Not a whole lot of reviews out there but the ones I've seen are good!

The Garrett Pro Pointer is a Very Good piece of equipment. Also Garrett Service is Outstanding. Hard to beat the combination.

You have a Reputable Dealer in your area of the World in Richard at Backwoods Detectors in Greeneville. He will answer any questions that you might have and and treat you fairly.

I would never want to attempt to detect without the assistance of Pin Pointer.

Stick with the Whites, avoid the Garrett.

Do a search on the internet for failures occurring with the Garrett. They used to pretty much have the market cornered, but now there are so many more options to spend your money on.

Everyone I know who had a Garrett PP had it sent back in for repairs, sometimes more than once.

These are personal experiences, your mileage may vary.

It would depend on how much you want to spend and what you expect out of one. I don't consider myself a "professional" detectorist. It's a hobby for me,whether I find something or not. I did my searching and bought an XPointer. Cheaper? Yes. Chinese? Yes. But distributed by Golddiggers in the US. Could it break? Sure. I've seen posts with broken Garretts, Whites, etc as well. The Deteknix XPointer does just as good a job as any pinpointer, and mine has served me well. It does not false at all, no matter the pushing or thumping. It detects a good 2". Of course if you plan on diving or using it underwater, I would suggest the units that cost twice as much because they are waterproof. It's all up to what you want it to do. Here is a great video on the Xpointer, Propointer and TRX. It is long but worth it. At the end, this guy shows a problem with the TRX that could be a problem (about 37 mins into the video).

Don't shoot the messenger. I just saw the XPointer as the better of the three, and for $90, a great deal.

Thanks, Good to know that there is a dealer close by.

Garrett. Minelab, Whites, Makro (new), and others... All have their lovers and haters. All do the job. Read the reviews, stick to the majors and choose one. A definite must for dirt fishing.
FYI... I have the Minelab... Works great for me.

I will second the recommendation of Richard at Backwoods Detectors... He sold me my used E-Trac. Love it!

The X-Pointer is the best out of the two mentioned(GPP.) Cheaper and with more options, AND with the same 2 year warranty. The TRX is great in depth but it's lacking of side detection is a downer. The Pistol Probe is deep also and with side detection but you can't hear the audio with headphones on or if there's any ambient noises happening.

Get the X-pointer for $90. You will make the best buy with the X-Pointer IMO.

I live about 2 miles from Richard. Where are you in ET SpencerHouse?

I'm with Larry, Since I got my Whites TRX, I've retired my 2 propointers to backup units. Its much deeper and has a finer tip for better pinpoint accuracy.

I am currently Using the Makro Waterproof Pin pointer,For about a month now.Works amazingly well.No falsing. Both my minelab and garret pointer started falsing withing 2 weeks. And best of all its waterproof(why they all arent is beyond me).Came with a great case,2 tip protectors. The Build quality is top notch.Ive been using it in all my Videos.Good Luck HH .Jim t

I just love the Sun Ray on my Sovereign GT, but it is limited to one type of detector , but my next favorite is the Uni Probe that is built into the headphones as you get a very good quality headphone with probe that is by far the deepest I have ever seen and can be used with any detector. The probe is small around and long and it see all metal, has a replaceable cord for the headphones so it can be changed in the Field and don't ruin your whole day as most know the cord is the biggest problem with any headphones. These have a volume control on them plus a control to set the threshold and one control if it is getting interference from your detector as it is a pulse probe. There is 2 toggle switches so one turns on the probe and shuts the sound off on the detector and the other is for a mono or stereo detector. I like mine and use it with the different detectors I try.
My wife uses a Garrett and loves it, but a Friend of mine has had to send his back to get the switched replaced several time, but that is about it. He also has the new Whites TRX and tells me it is a good probe, but it seems like when scanning a hole and turn the probe up to check the sides it will cut out and may have to send it in to be checked out. I just got in one of the new Macro probes to do a Field test on, but can only do a air test on it being we have cold and snow right now, but what I am seeing it is built great and seems to also work great and comes with a nice case to put it in a holder for the probe when detecting and 2 replaceable covers for the probe. For me it is very hard to hear the tones as my hearing is bad on high tones as I am deaf in them, but the vibration is good. The Pistol Probe I had I though was not working as it tones were just to high for my hearing, so it had to go to someone who has normal hearing.
Many people I have run into say they don't need no pinpointing probe, but after they try mine they say they cant detect without one now.

Rick
