Hello Fatty (and Scar Face too)!

Thanks Bill....I will check out those links. Would love to email you sometime about me getting started with my telescope.

Re the fatty IHs - why did they start making them in '59? I'd thought that they were made during the Civil War and assumed that they were using the copper for the war efforts, but '59 predates the war by a couple of years, doesn't it?

Those are the years they were minted and there is also a regular for the 1864 making 2 different versions. I see Bill already had mentioned it to you so I thought I would just put it down again since you asked. I understand that they register under the pulltab range but which type? If you could sometime, it doesn't have to be right away since you have it soaking in olive oil, swing it by either your Probe or the Coil and let me know what the digital readout is. Great find and thanks again for the info.

Hi, I've been using the TargetBuddy (see www.targetbuddy.com) to dig the initial hole and then my Lesche handshovel to go down deeper. The TargetBuddy only digs a 4" diameter hole and so I have to be careful with the Lesche -- I'm asking the owner to make me a 6" TargetBuddy if he can since the Explorer goes so deep and I have larger hands. I used to use a bayonet from an M-16 to dig the hole, but the TargetBuddy is faster, easier, and cleaner!

Hi, No problem....I'll pull it out of the oil and scan it tonight for you. I get home kind of late so it'll probably be around 11PM EDT.

Regards, Erik

This is the way to go since it is so easy to dig with and it also has the serrated edge for cutting those smaller pesky tree roots. If you have the best detector, you have to have the best digger and that is a fact jack! I will have to check that site out and see what the other digger looks like that you mentioned also. Thanks for the post Erik and Good Luck at that Park of yours.:detecting::thumbup:

I agree - the Lesche is top notch. What do you cut the plug with? The Lesch also? I used to use a bayonet, but am now using the TargetBuddy. It cuts a perfect plug and is quick.

I really don't know why it was 1859 and not later. I am sure someone can help us on that. I've found a 1859 IH before as well as 3 flying eagles in the space of a year and 2 months which is tremendous for the limited years they were minted... :D

I cut small plugs if possible to get at the coin or item and after I am done I take the Lesche and scrape the grass of as much of the dirt as possible and put the plug back down. Then I take the Lesche and scrape the grass where the dirt is still visible and do a fan like motion and this will make the dirt jump up off the grass and land in different areas. This makes the dirt just about invisible since it is depositing itself into a larger area and by the time I am done, the plug and the recovery will also be virtually invisible. It really takes a good eye to see my plugs. Every now and then a plug will not look as good as I wished but it doesn't happen very often.

Sounds good, I used to do the same but cut the plug with the bayonet. Finally tried the TargetBuddy that I bought a couple of years ago. It's less work than cutting the plug by hand. I also try to keep a card or something that I put the dirt and plug on and then just pour the dirt back in the hole. Saves the scraping step. I'm going out to the car to get my detector right now and will scan that fatty for you.

I use my Lesche digger also James. I think it is the best digger I have used so far. I always have a piece of plastic that I use for a drop cloth to put my excess dirt on when I'm going after a deep target. After I retrieve my target I just dump the dirt back in the hole, flip my plug back, tap it with my foot and you can't even tell I was there. It folds up nicely and fits in my pouch in my inside pocket.............:) HH.
