Headphones? ?

I currently have a set of Gray Ghost headphones but I am wanting a set with a little more crisp audio and higher pitch audio. What do you guys recommend? I am using a T2 classic and a Tesoro Mojave if that helps.

Grey Ghost *used* to make quality headphones. But at a certain point (not sure exactly when), the sounds got muffled and lousy.

I suggest killer B's.

MP3 earbuds, only in one ear...so you can hear surrounding noises, too...someone sneaking up behind you, yelling out a warning, atvs approaching, etc.

I bought a set of grey ghost last year because my brother had a set and they worked great, after receiving them I noticed right away they weren't as sharp and clear as his which were about 10 years old. Like Tom was saying they started down grading their headphones about 4 years ago but they did make mind right for another 30$ after already spending 129$ to start with.

grab the cheapest killer b's they have the same speakers / elements as pro golds , unless you need all the other knobs and switches on the pro golds both are sharp on Tesoro's and Fishers..

Well I am glad that I am not the first who thought the Gray Ghost wasn't as crisp or clean on the audio. What's sad is my sons 25.00 set of Calrads have better audio in my book.

Ah, so I'm not dreaming. And so-too has the lament been coming from others as well. I got a set about 15 yrs. ago and loved them. Crisp, high fidelity, etc... Then a year or two ago went to get another pair. Muffled and lousy ! Even though the exact model #, name, etc.... Same for Koss I might add.

The explanation I've heard is that manufacturers will routinely go on the open market for bids on the components that go INSIDE their earphones. So even though they might claim "made in the USA", yet the internal components might be bought en-masse from somewhere in Asia. And you can bet it's mighty tempting to go with the low bid, if the quality is *supposed* to be identical. But subtle differences in the internal components, that change as time goes on, do indeed have an effect on quality. So while the brand name and model # remain the same, the quality can be different.

I heard all Detectorpro headphones are now made overseas just like their Pirate detectors.

That could account for the difference in audio quality.
Find yourself a cheap pair of Calrad Headphones, they work great on most detectors.
They work perfect for me on the Tesoros I have owned and Teknetics .
They replaced my Killer b's

The owner of Chefphones told me that the CP2 would give me the crispness that I wanted on my Fisher models. I haven't bit the bullet yet but I probably will at some point. Reviews seem to be good as well.

From what I can understand, the frequency range of that model is skewed towards the mid to high frequency unlike most units that seem bass boosted and cut off somewhere in the upper mid-range.

I can tell you what speakers are in those ph's as I pulled them out and put better ones in I now call them frankinphones

seriously if you want crisp there isn't anything better than the Audiosears on a Fisher that I have found and I have tried a lot from 8 ohms to 600 and there is a reason they use them in most American made headphones because they work.. I know though that we have to look for the best and the ones I told you about are the best on the minelab that's what's in the frankinphones.

these are the ones I got in the chefs http://uk.farnell.com/pro-signal/abs-209-rc/loudspeaker-mini-mylar-cone/dp/1300021

make up your own mind

I have this thing where I have to pull stuff apart want to see what's in there :buds:

chef is made well I can say that much.

Definitely like killer B's. I have the wasps. Until I got them I had no idea what I was missing. Unbelievably crisp audio.

Yeah they have the Audiosears elements in them.... just like my AJ specials for the F19

I know no one gives banana about my headphones but I am bored so took up a couple minutes and made me feel better.

the last photo is of my Whites TRX tip protector now that's worth having a look at :bouncy:

Have a set of Grey Ghost deep woods. I dont have anything to compare them with as I never used headphones before. I dont hunt without them now. No knobs on the outside and cuts all the wind and sound of a busy city away. Kind of worried about snakes in the desert though. I would be interested to know what is inside my deep woods as far as a speaker?

you should be able to see the speaker through the plastic grill or if its just foam pull it back and have a look if its silver coloured and metal its a Audiosears element if not its something else..

No, I don't think they're illegal "Knock-offs". The recent Grey Ghosts have come from reputable dealers who are buying straight from the source. It's that Grey Ghost THEMSELVES apparently began to buy the internal components from cheapo-overseas sources.

Detectorpro made and sold Grey Ghost. Then DP decided it was cheaper to have them made overseas. From what I was told.
Bet it only cost DP $12.00 a pair to have them made there. Probably $75 to have them made in the US. Bet the same China company who makes the DP Pirate for DP, now makes the Grey Ghost.

thanx very much for that info. And I'll bet when the chinese soliciting for the work and parts will say that their standards (of internal components) will "measure up to such & such standards", etc.... Yet as you know, even the subtlest of differences of a single sound-part, will result in differences.

So far no complaints for my Grey Ghost. I am not a spring chicken so guess the difference doesnt effect me much. The reason for that is I have detectors that have a adjustable threshold. I can adjust the detector to my ear. Many things can cause hearing loss. So I wonder if the Killer B's just work the higher tones better? Maybe some guy figured out old guys buy stuff and we can get them with the higher freqs lol.
