headphones for mxt

nuggetbuster

New member
I need new headphones for my mxt, the ones that came with my mxt are killing my ears, very uncomfortable! Am willing to drop around 100 bucks for a good pair that won't make my ears feel like they've been in a bench vise! Any suggestions? sunray gold's or troy pro's or any other? thanks.

Hi Nuggetbuster, I use Grey Ghost originals with my MXT and I love them. I know there are others out there but I have not tried them, because mine work so well for me. Good luck with your decision. HH Dennis in Idaho

Nancy uses the Grey Ghosts with her MXT too and loves them. I use the Sunrays and I think they are a bit more comfortable for me. You really can't go wrong with either or several other top of the line phones.

Hi Nuggetbuster,

I agree, the orignal headphones are uncomfortable. However, my main problem was the loud blast on shallow signals when the gain is in the plus range. When I turned the headset volume down so these blasts didn't hurt, I couldn't hear the deep quiet signals.

I bought a pair of Killer B

Killer B for several years now. I am going to pick up a pair of new Sunray Pro Gold later this month as a 'back-up' set. They are essentially the same headphone as the Killer B Wasp, but with slightly different toggles, knob color, and the earcup pads are slightly more comfortable and don't have the 'memory' the Killer B's have.

Either one you pick will reward you with excellent quality, excellent audio, and excellent warranty, not to mention excellent comfort.

Borrowed one to get some detailed measurements to find out why MXT users need a limiter. Well, I can see why. A lot of difference between the quiet deep signals and the shallow blasts.

Ratphones full frequency response gives that machine a nice tonal balance. Not tinny and hollow like brands you may be used to. The quality of the audio will be greatly enhanced and make an MXT sound full of character as it was intended with the comfort and quality you need.
Our limiter will work just perfect and is a free option on request. It has absolutely no affect on normal signals but will limit those loud targets to just the right point and still hear that the target is shallow. This is called a soft knee limiter. It has more even order harmonics rather than odd which would cause a more harsh or distorted audio.

Most top of the line headphones made for detecting will work great. My wife has very sensitive ears (hears everything I do) and she has used the Killer bees and now she uses the Troy Pros and like both of them. She is sticking to the Troy Pros for comfort and not having to have any switches to get bumped. I use the Troy Pros on my Explorer as they sound the best to me, Timberwolfs on my Sovereigns as they have the best volume and tone quality for the Sovereigns.
I just got a set of the Rat Phones to try and haven't tried them on all my detectors yet,so I will wait before I say too much yet about them.

You'll find that the better the quality of the speaker (full range), the worst the Sov sounds. This is because there is too much low end in the Sov audio. If you have the Sov mod on your Rats, it will be automatically disconnected if you use a Whites machine.

Just a note that the controls in Ratphones can handle the power from the MXT with or without the limiter, but many other brands use lower power controls combined with lower ohm speakers that if operated with the MXT (and most other 12 volt machines) without a limiter, the controls will eventually "burn out" and become scratchy. They cannot handle the current when near max volume. Same goes for machines with a loud battery test tone.
If not using Ratphones, avoid turning the volume control durring loud signals.

As Rick(ND) said, most any high end phones will work well for you. My only detectors are an MXT and a DFX but shortly after I bought the MXT, I bought a set of the Killer Bee Wasp's and liked them alot. They were a huge improvement in all respects over the little White's phones but seemed to have a bit too much "squeeze" on my head for my liking, but I got used to it I guess because they were for the most part, very comfortable.
A couple months ago, they developed a break in one of the wires inside the cup. I ordered a set of Rat phones from "Rick@Detect USA" and personally find them more comfortable on my head and ears. I fixed the short in the Killer Bees, but just keep them in the tk. now for a backup pr. and to loan to hunting partners at times that has sore ears from the White's...

I have the rat phones for my MXT and I am very happy with them. I was given personal attention by Rick to get my phones just the way I wanted them. Rob

thank you all for the info now I will have to put all the names of headphones in a hat and draw one, I like the idea of only one volume knob and no switches but also like the fact that the new sunray's have leather covered muffs?!?!?!? Wish there was only one or two to choose from sometimes. Decisions Decisions

Ratphones has had the "Leather" muffs for a while now also. All the brands have it now. It is a better synthetic that looks and feels like leather but without problems such as drying out or cracking or harden like the vinyl. You can't even get the vinyl type anymore I don't think.

I've had the ratphones for a couple months now and really enjoy them. Comfortable and very good sound quality. You certainly won't go wrong with these.

HH,

Dan

hello rick, the main problem with my current phones are that my ears actually are being pushed in by the speaker covers in the phones, the muffs are not thick enough and after awhile it reallly hurts. I have normal size ears not like dumbo the ealaphant! I looked on your web site and like the single volume knob pair but I was wondering would if I got them and tryed them out and they are not deep enough to clear my ears, am I stuck with them and end up listing them on ebay?

I use the rattlesnake headset from Detector pro, I believe Mr. Bill sells them or any detector pro dealer.

The single cup provides cool comfort allowing the user to hear outside activity while still hearing the detector signal, Great for out in the bush or in rowdy areas not so safe both two legged or snake.

Really a good headset, Had mine three years now still working great............In the background is another hobby, RC flying and soon the big bird will be up in the air.

ordered a set of ratphones today one volume control with limiter, will let you all know what i think of them when i try them out

Hello David,

The MXT can hold it's own on relic hunting against the Explorer, Maybe even have an edge.

But for deep turf silver hunting at an old park the explorer has a stronger visual ID, Locks on well and will not get fooled with the smaller pieces of trash as would the MXT.

Not saying the MXT does not detect as deep as the Explorer which it does detect every bit as deep but the MXT is more sensitivity so the tiny smaller pieces of aluminum or trash reading as a deep coin will fool the MXT user, Not all detectors can do it all, Each have their own positive features.

Plus, The MXT can nugget hunt and is already proven to be a great nugget machine which the Explorer is not....Deep silver for the Explorer and a wide range of gold for the MXT :)

I have more detectors upstairs and stored away at another home, it's grown to be an expensive hobby.
