Headphone Question

Rick,
The toggle on my Ghost only works in the down position only, I hear nothing at all in the up position. Will you hear anything at all in the up position of the toggle on your set? Thanks for the info on Superphone.

Larry,
No you will not hear anything in the up position as this is the stereo mono switch. With in the up position it will work with the Whites and some other brands. The Gray Ghost I have here are the Ultimate and there is 2 switches on it, one is the stereo mono switch and the other is for the limiting curcuit to turn on or off. My wifes original Gray Ghost has the one toggle switch like your does and has the limiting curcuit built in like I beleive yours does too so you cant turn it off. This is great for most with normal hearing, but for some that are hard of hearing it is nice to turn it off as it makes the sounds louder. Ont the Explorer it makes no difference, but on my Sovereign it makes a big difference on the volume. This is why I feel the Explorer has a built in limiting curcuit.
Rick

He removed it,says they are louder with out it and also says the Ex. has a built in limiter so it is not needed.Fine by me,I was worried about it cutting out on loud coins anyway.6" deep coins sound like a man hole cover.

My first pair of the orignal Gray Ghost had the limiter taken out of right away as I need the volume for my Sovereign. Now the new Ultimates give you that choice with just a toggle switch to turn on or off the limiter. It sure would be nice if the sound would come though for us that are hard of hearing, for those that have good hearing you can be thankfull, for those of us that are hard of hearing we have to keep trying to find something better.
Like I say the Timberwolfs have been the best I have found so far for volume, but the Gray Ghost are great too and the volume is almost as good and the tone the same. Either way I feel you will have the best.

Rick,
I talked to Gary Storm today from Detector Pro. He seems to think there is probably a limiter already in the XS and I'm getting a double limit. He said he didn't have time to check the Nugget Busters on his explorer, but said these are pobably the phones I would need cause they are identical to the NDT's except no limit. Minelab couldn't give me an answer today if theres a limit or not on the Explorer but gave me a number to reach the right guy(no answer)who I will contact Monday. I don't have a problem hearing coins around the 8 in range with the NDT's its just those deeper ones that I play hell with straining to hear them. I'm just hoping this double limit thing is the problem and I'll then get the Nugget Busters and give them a try. I will let all know what I find out Monday.

Keep us informed Larry,
The Ultimates Gray Ghost also has a switch that you can turn on or off the limit curcuit and i see no difference when tuning it on or off, this is why I feel the limit is in the Explorer and over rides the one in the headphones.
Any way I am curious what you find out.
Rick

What model of JVC headphones did you buy? Sounds like a winner to me.

They are Model HA-D50 and they say Digital Ready on them (for whatever that's worth). They have big cushy ear pad covers that go completely over your ears, instead of sitting on top of your ears, like the factory-supplied ones fit.
It seems like the original retail price was something like $85, but since this particular model is not made any longer, and they were the last pair this fellow had, I got them for $35. I got them at a local but specialized audio shop. The guy deals strictly in fairly expensive audio devices and really doesn't try to compete with discount houses. I tried him after I checked Walmart and K-mart and found nothing that even came close to what I was looking for.
If you go to the JVC web site, or some outlet that sells JVC, I'm sure they probably have a newer model of about the same quality and specifications. I can't tell you for sure what the impedance of these are, but I'm thinking it may have been 105 ohms.
My set came with a long heavy-duty cord (maybe 12') and although I have it coiled up right now, I am planning on replacing the cord with a good quality coiled cord.

Thanks for the info. The only thing I have against the stock earphones is the fact I would like a little more volume (especially at the beach), and I find the phones are a little uncomfortable after a few hours on my ears. I think the pads are a touch small-sized as the edges of my ears begin to tingle after awhile. So I am looking for both improved volume and comfort.

I agree, comfort is mainly why I changed them out. After an hour, they were making my ears hurt.

Hi, I bought a pair of headphones purpose built inside a set of ear defenders, military style. I called the supplier as these would not operate correctly with the Explorer. Inside there is a small slot to change from stereo output to mono. The dealer explained the Explorer uses a mono output. I changed the switch device to mono - all OK. In earlier posts someone mentioned the faint sounds from the buit-in speaker when the headphones are plugged in. I called Minelab who confirm ALL Explorers display this 'quirk' to a greater or lesser degree. It's more noticable indoors..like putting a mobile phone near a HiFi...a sort of feed-back.
