Headphone Question

What is a good "all around" set of headphones and how important is the "ohms impedance".I've see them listed from 10 ohms to well over 100 ohms?

I've had several sets over the last two years. There are lots of good ones out there - I assume. The last set I bought were the Deep Woods made by Grey Ghost. They seem to be well made ... however I have fairly good hearing and the problem is these earphones do not have a volume adjustment. You can flip a switch and either get the high volume or low volume.

I've also had Kosk <<< close spelling. They were decent but "wimpy". Quality is not the same ... then again the price is about 1/2 of the Grey Ghosts.

Danny,

I can't answer the impedance question, I'm not that technical. I use Troy Pro headphones. They're made for detectors instead of stereos, and at $75 they were a good buy in my book. They have a 12' (uncoiled length) cable which allows me to stand up when my machine is on the ground without yanking the phones off my head. Dual volume controls, no external switches, 90-degree angle plug, lifetime warranty. I tried the Garrett headphones that came with my machine and they killed my ears (ears didn't fit inside earcups). This is one of those "you get what you pay for" things, I'd go with Gray Ghost, Ratphones, Killer B's or Troy Pro.

I like the Troy Pros on my Explorer as they have the best volume, best cord that is made to last and very comfortable too. My wife has a set too for her MXT and she loves them too. Now on my Sovereigns I like the Timberwolfs for the volume and the tone quality. The Sun Ray Pro Golds too are some of the best I have tried along with the Gray Ghost originals, but neither one has the volume I need being I am very hard of hearing. For comfort the Sun Ray Pro Gold and the Troy Pros I think are the best.

Higher ohms offer a crisper sound as far identifying fairly deep targets that don't give a great audio response. As for brands, not sure as to which are the best. It looks as though the others named some good models. Good luck.

The machine decides what it needs for the best performance especially if using a machine thats tone based for discrimination.
With the seven detectors I use most I need three sets of phones to get the very best performance from each. It seems a bit extreme but then you need a spare set anyway to allow for breakdown.
Another consideration is whether the jack is a straight one or at a 90 degree angle, 90 degree being better if the jack is on a control box down the shaft and facing away from you (like the Troy Shadows). Straight jacks clear control box covers and fit better between knobs and the edge of the detector on small control boxes.
I like Grey Ghosts but like several brands that have 'click' volume controls one click up can be to loud and one down not loud enough.
If you have poor hearing in one ear then its best to look for individual volume controls. If you haven't then one volume control versions tend to be a little louder.
It really is a try before you buy situation

Nice to have choices between quality headphones. Grey Ghost, Killer B's etc. I have been using RATphones for a few months now and they work great on the MXT with single or dual volume controls and optional limiter to calm down the ear bashing overload signal. All quality components. Leather ear pads and all. The comfort is amazing. I can wear them for hours with no discomfort and allot less sweating than vinyl ear pads. They have them designed for minlabs, whites, garretts, troys and the rest.
