I have a question relating to selection of headphones. My issue is not so much the size of ear cups but the thickness of them. If the ear cup isn't thick enough, part of my ear rubs against the plastic screen that covers the speaker and in a little while becomes very sore. When I bought my original phones for my 6000, I had to take the ear cups apart and build up the inside with layers of cardboard cut to resemble "O"s, just to keep that plastic surface away from my ear. Which of the phone models that have been discussed have the thickest ear cups? It would be nice not to have to modify a new set of phones just to make them wearable - especially if they cost $120!

The Koss QZ99 passive noise reduction detector specific head phones or the QZ5 behind the head model have the deepest most comfy cup that I have seen. They have great sound and are built like a tank and are very reasonably priced $40.00 to $60.00 a pair on Amazon about $80.00 a pair at Kellyco. They also have a lifetime guarantee on them and happen to be my back up headphones and also one of my personal favorites.

I do not like headphones. They are too hot and sweaty in the Summer, and they make my ears hurt from rubbing on them. Also, I like to wear a hat in the Summer that has a flap in the back and sides to keep the sun off my neck. I have been using a set of Sony sport earphones. They have a clip that goes behind the ear to help keep them in place. They have very good sound. I use a 1/4" to 1/8" adapter plug to connect them. Also, I purchased an in-line volume control on e-bay for around $3.00 to adjust the volume. It has about a 2 foot cord that I folded up until it is around 2 or three inches long, so there is not a lot of extra cord hanging off the detector. I have been very happy with this set up.

I forgot to mention, the Sony earphones sell for around $15.00.

Thanks Bill! That's great info! When you refer to "all the ones you've seen" can I assume that means the Pro Star, Jimmy Sierra and Killer B phones that the others have been discussing? Not trying to nit-pick, just trying to get a sense of how broad a sample of phones we're talking about.

Pete,

Yes, I am the one that reviewed and suggested the Jimmy Sierra phones I also use and own the Killer Bee headphones. My favorite headphones are the Jimmy Sierra MaxiPhone III followed very very close by the Koss QZ99 or the QZ5 headphones mentioned depending on the style you like. The reason I suggested the Koss phones to you is because of the extra room or thickness in the ear muff area that you mentioned needing or wanting.

Plastic? I wouldn't like that one bit. That's another good reason I like the SunRay Pro Gold phones.....they're leather and very comfortable.

Nancy not to offend here but if you read Petes original post Pete ask about the size or thickness of the ear cups as he was having issues with the cups being to small on many headphones. The Sun Ray Pro headphones have the smaller or smallest ear cups for a full size detector specific headphone just like the standard Killer Bee model headphone. Yes they do have the soft leather ear muff cushions like the Killer Bee headphone.

The Koss QZ99 and the QZ5 headphones mentioned to Pete have a nice large roomy or thicker ear muff cup witch is what he ask about or needed in a headphone. No they do not have a leather ear muff cushion but do have a very comfy gel filled rubberized material ear muff cushion that seals better in my opinion than even the leather cushions. Acutely I prefer them myself after having used both for many years but all of this stuff is really a personal option or preference of the individual people out there using these headphones and mileage may vary from person to person (no one really knows until they try a headphone for them self) Again Pete wanted a good quality headphones with a thicker or deeper roomy ear muff cup.

Also on another (note) the Koss QZ99 and QZ5 headphones are 60 OHM and have a fuller tone not as pitchy or thrill as the Sun Rays and the Killer Bee headphones. A tone more like the White's Pro Star phones or the Jimmy Sierra MaxiPhone III model headphones.

Got my eyes on a nice used MXT All Pro. What head phones do you current MXT users suggest? My hearing is pretty good considering the amount of rock concerts and construction equipment I've been exposed to. Not looking to drop a couple hundred dollars, rather maybe something around 100.

So true Nancy but you already replied on the first page to the original poster mentioned about the Sun Ray headphones and your feelings about them. So with that being said for you to reply again on the 3rd page about the ear muffs or ear cups and how you felt about the ear cups it looked as if you were replying to Petes and my conversation about headphones with deeper ear cups. So do you see how it looks and why I replied the way I did?
