Head phones for MXT All Pro

MattBullSummerville

Well-known member
Got my eyes on a nice used MXT All Pro. What head phones do you current MXT users suggest? My hearing is pretty good considering the amount of rock concerts and construction equipment I've been exposed to. Not looking to drop a couple hundred dollars, rather maybe something around 100.

and everything else I use, are:

White's Pro Star, Killer B 'Wasp' and Killer B II, in that order. All of them have a Lifetime Warranty by the manufacturer, but since I live here in Oregon, home to White's, and I am a fan of their products, the Pro Star headphones are my main-use set.

There's a fellow who's interested in a like-new MXT All-Pro I have for sale and he first had to buy a set of Pro Star headphones to use on his current detector to check them out. He said they made a world of difference over the inferior headphones he had.

The new Jimmy Sierra MaxiPhone III  not the older MaxiPhone II model headphones. I found myself not even wanting to wear my Killer Bees after trying the new Jimmy Sierra MaxiPhone III headphones and that surprised me big time. The new Jimmy Sierra MaxiPhone III have 150 Ohm speakers like other top end headphones but with a lower frequency than the older MaxiPhone II models did. This change according to Jimmy allowed them to hear targets at on average of 20% deeper according to there claims when tested by Digger Bob. Well I don't know about that and can't say one way or the other so far with my use of them.. But I can say the tone of the new MaxiPhone III headphones are awesome to me and they really added to the tone and sound of the tone ID function on my White's M6 detector. They had a much wider fuller sounding tone to them no where as pitchy or tiny sounding for lack of better words as my Killer Bee phones. I really dig these new Jimmy Sierra MaxiPhone III headphones ( They are manufactured to Jimmy Sierra specs by Detector Pro the manufacture of the Gray Ghost line of headphones)

These headphones to date are the best headphones I have used on the White's M6 and MXT detectors. They also work fantastic on my Tesoro detector. Give them a look they are very nice headphones.

I've got the SunRay Pro Gold phones and I can't say enough good about them. They are a bit pricey but worth every penny. I'm thinking around $120, but not sure....it's been so many years since I got mine. They have a very comfortable ear pad made of leather rather than that awful plastic that many of them have. I've worn them in the heat of summer and winter and have NEVER had any problems with discomfort. I even wear my earrings and still no problem. Yes, they are that comfortable. If fact, that's the only headphones I own. HH, Nancy

Bill where can one find a set of maxiphonelll head phones ? Thanks, GS

Just do a web search for www.jimmysierra@jimmysierra.com and you can buy them direct or you can have a local White's dealer get them for you. Jimmy has been involved with White's directly for years and is there West Coast distributor for all White's detectors. I got my pair of MaxiPhone III at my local White's dealer for $98.00 but on Jimmy's web page there $119.95

I find them both very comfy but prefer the bigger and fuller ear cups on the MaxiPhone III headphones. This is of course a personal preference.

I have used the killer B 'Wasp' models for over a decade with great pleasure, and the audio option (Limiter or no Limiter) is especially helpful with some models, such as any White's Classic series model. They have a sort of 'muffled' audio with most headphones, but the Killer B's enhanced that with a more brilliant audio response. I use them with almost every detector I own, have owned, or have borrowed.

The one issue, and only issue, that I have with the Killer B's 'Wasp' and the SunRay Pro Gold (essentially the same headphone by the same maker) is they often can pinch my ears a little more than I enjoy. The White's Pro Star headphones use the larger 'tank' type ear cup, similar to what Killer B uses on the 'Hornet' model, and I find them much more comfortable on a along day's hunt.

I'll still suggest you visit a local dealer and try headphones on for a good fit, check their comfort and make sure they are not floppy, then plug them in and hear how they sound.

Killer Bee and Sun Ray headphones are not manufactured by the same folks. They do use and share the same type or brand headphone cups between the two brands (and Monte that may have been what you meant) and the same cup as the Detector Pro Jolly Rogers. The bigger tank cups like on the Killer Bee Hornets the White's Pro Stars headphones are the same headphone cups that Detector Pro AKA Gray Ghost the Jimmy Sierra MaxPhone III mentioned all use.(same cups or headphone muffs) All the detector specific headphone manufactures mentioned in this thread use the same type available cups or muffs either the big or smaller style cups and put there guts consisting of there wiring there specific speakers and switches into them.

I have had the best luck and best sounding with the ProStars. The Killer Bees and others were to shrill sounding. But my hearing is off a little and the lower OHMS sound better to me. The Prostars are at 50 OHM while most the others are at 150 OHM.

That's the reason why I like the newer Jimmy Sierra MaxiPhone III headphones mentioned above they have a special lower frequency design 150 OHM speaker with a fuller lower tone to them not a shrill sound to them like the Killer Bees (I love the tone of the MaxiPhones) and they have the bigger ear cups like the White's Pro Star headphone. They just plain sound way better to me than Killer Bee and Sun Ray headphones. I would like to try the White's Pro Stars, I bet they sound a lot like my Jimmy Sierra MaxiPhone III headphones.

Really? They must have changed since I got my last SunRay Pro Gold's because they are made FOR SunRay and made BY B&B Distributors, aka Killer B. When I spoke with him on the phone about a year-and-a-half-ago I asked why the difference in the ear cup Volume controls, and he told me that, and a few other things, were just the way they wanted them made. With the Killer B brand they rotated one direction to increase the volume, and the SunRay Pro Gold's rotated the opposite direction to increase the volume.

SunRay is just a business that sells some products with their 'brand' on it but made for them, not by them .... unless that has changed. Oh, my SunRay Pro Gold headphones had a warranty card to be filled out and returned to B&B.

No, I meant what I explained above, but you're correct about all those companies using the same/similar ear cups and many other parts.

I still enjoy both my Killer B headphones, the Black 'Wasp' and camo Killer B II, but they have become my 'back-up' most of the time since the tank-style ear cup on White's Pro Star headphones are larger and more comfortable.

Thanks for the info I did not realize killer bee or B&B disturbers built the Sun Ray phones that's good to know. But tell me Monte why the heck do you always break down every dam detail in that long drawn out format you do to people in your postings? I appreciate your input but don't need every little detail of what I said dissected, I know what I said Monte

All you folks on here are a riot! Thanks so much for all the suggestions. Picked up a pair of Pro Stars on ebay for $65 shipped so guess I can't go wrong with them. Hpy hunting and Merry Christmas to all of you.

Bill G,

I certainly don't do it to offend anyone, and there are reasons why I reply to many posts that way.

One reason is that even if it implies a more direct response, many readers follow a lot of the threads. By breaking them down, the reader doesn't have to refer back to a post to see what was asked or stated. It also helps me so I don't have to refer back to a post to make sure I cover the different parts in many of them.

I'll try to remember not to do that in a future direct response to you.

Monte

Glad you found a pair and hope you'll like them. HH and a Merry Christmas to you also.

Good point Monte, it does help sometimes to have the details and past information. Keeps me from paging back and forth. All the comments helped me make decision. Seems the difference between many of the models come down the comfort and personal preference. My hearing is such that I am most likely hard pressed to tell much difference in specs. For my budget (and desire to buy different coils) the price was right for the Pro Stars in almost new condition. Hope to cross paths with some of you die hard MDers this next year.

Matt

Monte, Keep up the good work. I like the way you post, it dose help to see what you are talking about. We don,t care if one or two don,t like it, all the rest do. Please don,t stop posting the way you do. I try to read all your post, very good post and info in them.
