Having withdrawals in West Central Florida

Other than a few wet sand hunts at low tide and some uneventful inner bay hunts, the west winds, strong thunderstorms and high surf has made it nearly impossible to get out past knee to waist deep in the Gulf. Its been nearly 2 weeks of this, with this weekend looking like a washout for visiting beach goers, forecast is the same through Tuesday.....Strong West winds and storms.:surrender:

Well, you have really had a Great year up to this point! :clapping: Northern beaches are just now cranking up for the season...maybe we can carry the load of gold posts here for a while!:crylol:
Mud

Out in the early morning for a few hours of dry sand hunting with the Xterra 705.Only got a small amount of change and by the time I left a small rain band was moving on shore, but blue skies were behind it. Tomorrow is forecast to be a washout.
It was noticeably a little calmer out past the sandbar but still there were some decent rollers breaking on the bar. Nice body surfing, body slamming, jewelry dislodging waves and the tourist were out in force early after being kept inside most of Saturday. Should be nice after this all clears up and we get back to a east wind, but you can bet we got sanded in after 2 weeks of heavy surf. GL ALL

* Mud, only half way through the year...more to come I hope!! Good luck to ya, go getem!

** Dancer, we don't get those big tide swings on the Gulf like the ocean side, but I do love those low tides.

* * *Hey Joe, I'm north of you over the big bridge in the St.Pete/Clearwater area. I get down your way once in a while....Last year I was down in Venice and my best find was this sharks tooth found in a divers bag that was buried in the sand in waist deep water. I was using the DF and the metal handle of the bag set it off.

Thats a cool tooth! I've always wanted to go find a megalodon tooth in the Neuse River or someplace!

Bob, if you get bored, you can pull up 'Grand Haven Surf Cam' or Muskegon Web Cam or any web cams on the Great Lakes to see where we hunt...real time footage, with water temps and wind and all..sort of interesting to see whats up in the cold fresh water beach traffic...the Great Lakes have come up nearly 3' in just the past few years...the fastest water level rise in history in fact...we were finding all sorts of old gold/silver when the water was way down back in 2013, which was the lowest water level in history...Conditions changed so fast, I'm completely goldless for the year..still cant get a coil over the top of it, not for lack of trying! Just slogging along punching clad daily to keep me in the game until it shows up..

Nice work there, I enjoy your posts, keep us inspired when this weather breaks for you...:beers:
Mud

Visited my Sister and Brother in Law January last year and that wind out of the west kept us out of the water the entire week. We had better luck at a "Worn out Park" (according to my brother in law) than we did working the beaches from Ft Myers north.

I dont mind the waves if i can get behind them or they are being pushed by that West wind causing wave durations to be about every 3 seconds. That can wear you out fast, you cant look down at your scoop without getting a face full of water....... not to mention you may just get to test how water proof your headphones are. Rain rain go away.

*Mud.. I've checked out those cams before Just to reinforce my humbleness to be living here in paradise. This is a local surf cam on Sunset Beach a part of Treasure Island, Florida, I always check them when thinking of going out....the surfers love it here. http://sunsetbeachflsurfcam.com/
Lots of big shark teeth come from the rivers and lime pits around here...On Venice beach the smaller ones, a lot smaller than this one, are as plentiful as shells.

** GSC... this is an unusual weather pattern we are in right now. West winds off the Gulf do happen in the summer, but not for Two weeks straight. Storms form off shore in the morning and move inland and across the state, which is just the opposite to what we are used to. They should build up on the east coast in the morning and move across state, hit our west coast sea breeze and then we get "the afternoon drop" around 4/5 PM. with this pattern the Gulf is pancake flat in the morning and the beach is hotter than heck all day.

** Yea Dew...got to get out past the break and watch your back, If you're not paying attention you'll get pushed too far in and your phones don't only get wet, but taken right off your head. I'm with you, Rain go Away!!

*** Thanks DG

Bob I do st.beach and treasure to maidera during tourest and snow season .They are doing beach rec. down this way all the way to venice , after this week should get better for me and the finny. hope we can cross paths in the future . Keep on swiggin

Nothing worse then being on vacation and conditions just don't work out. Good Luck!

when we were down in Venice back in April they had just finished the renourishment project. The whole place from the pier up to and past Venice beach was buried. Hopefully by next Feb things will have settled down some. GL and HH

Feel bad for anyone who had vacation plans for here the past two weeks or the one coming up cause we are still getting hammered.
Big problem with the renourishment like they did here around the passes last year is storms coming in off the Gulf from NW or SW just spreads the new sand down or up the beaches that were not renourished and covers targets......

You got that right Bob about it spreading South. I was up at the pier the other day at Venice........you can walk out to the sand bar now. It changes the current pattern as well. Those spots that used to give dont now and sand is loose and buries anything new. Takes a couple years of hit and miss just to recover recent drops. They are now discussing Manasota Key.. Plus a lot of those renurishments...... they pack the sand......no one looses anything on hard pan.

Head on over to the east side and hunt fort lauderdale, deerfield, pompano, boca. hollywood ,delray area's .

Im heading down on Monday for 12 days to hunt. Looking forward to running my custom pi. always a good time in Fl.

10 days later since this post was started and ....the Torture never stops!! Still nothing but storms, wind and rain. http://sunsetbeachflsurfcam.com/
Beach re-nourishment projects that were done last year are taking a beating. Two local city beaches that received tons of sand, Treasure Island and St.Pete Beach, are losing tons of beach sand by the day. Three that I visited, Treasure Islands North beach and Sunset are showing lots of erosion, and Upham on SPB has lost yards of sand that has spread south in front of the hotels. Have not been down to PAG, but it can't be much better!!
* With all the rain and major high tides the water has no place to go and flood warnings, alerts and evacuations are happening now all around the Tampa Bay area.

Could be true Joe. I just worked the wet slope last night since the big waves have been taking so much sand off the beach....it really is noticeable on some of the beaches I checked out today. Got one area that I think will be good. Never have done well MDing eroded sand off of re-nourished beaches, their only good for fossilized turtle shell and horse teeth.
* Out at Upham beach the groins ( Yellow sand bags) that were covered by the dredged up sand are already starting to be uncovered.
