Ive been breaking up the wintertime dull drums by getting out every few weeks to see some shows and i must say some of them have been impressive as far as quality sound... saw trace atkins- country artist-back in october..im not necessarily a country fan but the show ok, about average... back in August i saw steely dan at an outside venue and must say they had a very good sound and vocals were solid im not necessarily a steely dan fan either but the tix were free and the performance musically speaking was solid .... in november we saw roger hodgson formerly of supertramp..excellent performance and sound quality ...crowd gave him a 5 minute standing ovation as soon as he walked out on stage prior to the show...it was one of those shows that really really was special....i bought the signed cd out in the lobby after the show........ in January we saw a band called the mc cartney years...we saw them in a tiny little theater so we were real close to the stage... it was a good show,, they did a good job on alot of the older mc cartney and w ings tunes...they covered a bunch of beatles tunes in the 2nd half of the show..tix were only like 30 bucks a piece and the sound was fine.. it was entertaining and certainly worth the price.... 2 weeks ago we saw the alan parsons project at another small theater. .. ive seen them 5 years ago and both times they were fantastic with probably the finest sound quality of any performances ive ever seen...when got 9 people on stage performing and can actually hear each instrument and vocal equally you know the mix is right and very few groups can get it perfect but they did... 5 years ago when we saw them we were in the 2nd row and i got a drum stick for a souvenir which he signed after the show at a meet and greet..this last time we saw them was not a meet and great but i kindly asked his wife if alan was signing autographs tonight..she said wait here and came back 5 minutes later with the cd i gave her signed..i thanked her very much.... last night we saw dennis deyoung formerly of styx... ive seen him on pbs channel a while back and thought the show was gonna be a little on the fluffy soft side but they were a tad louder than expected.. the show was great the sound was better than most but not perfect but it wasnt bad either, could have been the venue had an influence on sound quality ... next month we see the fab faux... its a beatles tribute band based out of nyc that does a real detailed performance of beatles songs and they dont just play the hits, they play anything and everything beatles ..weve seen them many times and they never disappoint ...they dont try to sing in beatle voices either which acually makes it much better...they are very talented and well worth seeing especially if you are a diehard beatles fan...we do the meet and greet after the show..hand shake and a picture type of thing...i got drummer rich pagano to sign a drum stick .... years ago weve seen the moody blues several times.. 1 st time we ever saw them we had front row tix... i managed one drum stick from each drummer... musically they are real good but unfortunatly the vocals are about gone as those guys are getting old... have you seen any good shows lately and if so how would you rate the performance... life is too short to waist time on sub par entertainment.... happy hunting and rock on...

Bootyhoundpa I use to be a concert goer but not so much these days. A couple of years back I saw a band that performed Eagle's songs and they had the Houston Symphony Orchestra backing them up and they were good. I would have liked to seen Steely Dan....that group had some good albums in the mid 70's. I like old school Country music just as much as I like good ole Rock and Roll but don't really care for the newer Country... but that's just me getting old. Ha! Last year I caught the last part of a show on TV that was a group performing Beatle songs and they were good. I kept hoping they would play "Number 9" but they passed on that one. HaHaHa! Those are some cool Rock trophy's you've collected there:)......Rock On!

Thanks for reply tex...i use to only hit 2 or 3 shows per year but there are certain bands that only come around these parts every so many years and acually it seems as though ticket prices have dropped somewhat... me and the wife saw the eagles some 12 or 15 years back..they were good but man we were way way back and tix to that show were pricey... funny you should mention revolution#9.. we saw the fab faux perform it once, they did a good job but why anyone would want to hear it is beyond me..ha ha... if you are from texas as your name sort of implys i can only imagine the country and western opportunities .... i know george jones was scheduled to play one the local venues near me but unfortunately he died a few weeks before the show... my wife likes the new country..my country taste is rather limited but i liked johnny cash music... that last video he made before he died is so profound ..it makes the hair on the back of my stand up every time i hear it.. twang on...

Yes some of these concerts today can get pretty pricey but then some are not too bad. James Taylor did a show here this past summer that we checked on but for us the cost kept us home:unsure:. I was being funny about "Number 9" though I have listened to it a couple times on Youtube lately. In the mid 60's-67... The Pink Floyd (with Syd Barrett the founder) would play across the pond at venues playing psychedelic music where Keith Richards, Paul McCartney, David Bowie among others would hang out. Syd Barrett was light years ahead of his time in music and influenced many other artists to experiment with music and use different sounds. The Beatles probably were influenced by Syd Barrett when they wrote "Number 9" and maybe a few other songs from the White Album. In just a short time the Beatles went from "Love Me Do", "I Want To Hold Your Hand" to "Helter Skelter", "Number 9", "Why Don't We Do It In The Road"... what a drastic change in short time.

George Jones and Johnny Cash are both Country Legends that sadly I never had a chance to see in person. Can't even start to count the number of times I heard them(and a host of others from that era) on AM radio growing up in Texas and that is why I love my Country! One of my favorite Johnny Cash songs is "Sunday Morning Sidewalk". I think the next time I get my license plates renewed I will opt for BR-549:)

My wife and I went to one of the casino's here to see the Fab Four on valentines day night, these guy's are the premier Beatles tribute band. I highly recommend seeing them if you're a Beatles fan. Very entertaining and if you weren't watching you would swear they were the real deal. They have a guy that imitates Ed Sullivan who does an excellent job, he's hilarious and has the voice and mannerisms down to a "T". Best 40 bucks I've spent in a long time.

was an old fictional 5 digit phone number that was used in a comedy skit on the Country show "Hee-Haw" back in 1969-80's. I use to watch it with my Dad back in the 70's.....gosh I miss those times.

Gear Box I would gladly pay 40 bucks to see a show of that caliber...I remember watching Ed Sullivan growing up and his shows aired some musical greats!

ya gearbox i saw that fab four tribute band with the ed sullivan imitater... we took our god son to see them like a year and a half ago... they did a real good job on the earlier tunes and a fair job on the later stuff as well..i just sometimes think a few of these bands spend a little too much effort singing in a british accent in stead of just singing in one own. own normal voice..but all and all they do a very good job and i will always remember that show because my god son who has cerebral palsy and rarely ever talks was singing along with every song word for word, it blow my mind and brought great joy to my wife and i to see him having so much fun... oh i got ya tex, hee haw reference.... ooh. Ok...i use to watch it when i was like 10 or 11....

The last concert I went to was America at the Sandy Amphitheater in Sandy Utah. Good show. That was the 3rd time I saw them. I have been to some pretty good ones. The Rolling stones Voodoo Lounge Tour, The Eagles Hell freezes over tour, Fleetwood Mac, and I got to see the Grateful Dead a couple months before Jerry Garcia passed on. RIP Jerry!

Ya DJB i like america...saw them like 20 years ago at a free concert thingy..they were pretty good..the one guy had some trouble hitting some of the high notes but thats to be somewhat expected...i really like their music alot.... i saw the eagles once ...very good show...that hell freezes over concert video is excellent as is the cd ....i can listen to it over and over ....must have been a great show.... im going to see james taylor in a few months... we also have tix to see darious rucker, collective soul,3 doors down.... thanks for sharing....

I'd like to see 3 Doors Down, and collective soul! I've been to quite a few concerts over the years, but for some reason I don't remember all the details that well. ZZ Top was my first one, in 1976...I think. FANDANGO!! Lol, I was 14 years old. I remember that one pretty well. First time for me to see a lot of things that night. And I think Ray Wiley Hubbard was the last...a couple years ago.

Hey dgruff , i think we are the same age, when i sit here and do the math i was 14 in 1976 too..ha ha... i imagine that early zz top concert must have been pretty cool..i like there earlier stuff but there later polished stuff not so much...they come around my area every so often ... i probably wont buy tix to see them but if i score some free tix i would definitely go... i saw james taylor 3 weeks ago..im not a big JT fan but him and his band definitely put on a great quality show, sound and vocals were great..his voice hasnt aged one bit....im not familiar with that ray wiley hubbard you mentioned..i will google it ... as far as 3doors down and collective soul thats in about 3 weeks and i will give a report after those shows if any ones interested....

I got to see some of the bands I've always wanted to in the last few years. Problem is most the original players are dead or burned out so it was really in name only. Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top played out at our new casino. We had a "Rock N' Race Fest" a few years back with Halestorm, Pop Evil and Head East and our old band Switch was asked to come on stage. Got to go in back and party with Halestorm, Pop Evil and Head East. Was a great time for sure. Got a few pictures.

With Head East and Pop Evil.

Pretty cool with the back stage pass southwind... ya i know what you mean about these band from wayback and the lack of original members but hey sometimes it can be a good thing especially when it comes to vocals.... i like that hit headeast had back in the day..since you been gone,,good stuff.... not familiar with pop evil or halestorm but the one philly radio station i listen to kind of promotes them so to speak from time to time... i never saw skynyrd with the old line up or new line up but i did buy there live album back in the 70s... great live album for sure....

That's cool Southwind. Especially Lizzy, lol. She's kind of pretty. And is that your car in your sig pic? That looks pretty bad azz!

BHP- Ray Wiley Hubbard is a "red dirt" country music singer/songwriter here in Texas. Or "Texas country" as some folks call it. He's been at it for 30-40 years, I guess.
And YES! I would like to hear your "critique" on the upcoming concerts! This is a good thread!

This is a good thread!
hey dgruff, i just watched an hour or 2 of ray wiley on utube...ya man he's got his own little americana, bluesy, storytelling, swamp music thing going on ... i see the attraction. ... very deep and full sound for just one guy playing guitar... i notice alot of his songs have very simular 3 cord and baseline patterns but he makes it work .... i will give you some feedback on future shows...next show is in like 3 weeks...

my sister in law surprised my wife and i with free tix ...... cheap trick was soso....the problem was there sound system was too loud and muddy sounding ,or atleast thats how it was from our seats...either their sound people dont know what there doing or there equipment wasnt compatible with the venue which is really ashame because i like their music and the vocals were actually a little better than what i was expecting. .. rick neilson was his usual entertaining self throwing probably somewhere around a 1000 guitar picks into the crowd over the course of the show... they played a good hour and a half, great setlist but like i said the sound was muddy... frampton came on stage a little after 10pm... the sound quality was absolutely great, warm, smooth, not too loud.... every song sounded great...you could hear all the individual parts... vocals were fine especially considering he is 65 now, musicianship even better of course... they played a little over an hour... so if you have tix to see this show you may want to take earplugs along for the 1st act.... frampton i would definitely consider seeing again...

Cool. I've seen Cheap Trick before. But that was back in their prime. And I like a lot of their music too....it sucks it didn't sound good for you. And I've never been a very big Frampton fan. Although if I had free tix, I'm sure I'd still go! LoL He's been playing a long time. I guess he finally got his life straightened out? Orr am I thinking Leif Garrett? Hell, probably both of them, lol.
Thanks for sharing! I check back here all the time now.

Too bad about the sound system not being "up to par" with Cheap Trick...must have been a bad night for the sound crew? My brother and sister in law saw Steve Winwood a few years back and they commented that the audio that night was WAY TOO LOUD which pretty much ruined the performance for them. Can't imagine why they would have the audio that loud for Steve Winwood? Brought back memories of me once stuffing my ears with un-smoked cigarette filters because the sound was too high for my liking. Ha! Peter Frampton is an awesome guitarist...sounds like his performance saved the night for ya'll. Just curious did Peter Frampton crank out any Humble Pie songs he played back in the day with Steve Marriott of Small Faces fame? Rock on:super:
