I dug them a few years back at Gettysburg spots.

seen them, have one but never dug one. you are fortunate to have dug them. fair amount of them have been found in the Gettysburg area over the years haven't they. I would like to hunt uo there one day, it has been 20+ years since I have been up there.

You have to hunt Chancellorsville & Gettysburg to find them buddy. Mine are Gettysburg.

Only seen others post them. None down this way. Great find.

Yes they come out once and a while around Gettysburg. I got mine at two different spots just south of there. The one spot is a pasture that's over grown now. It had cows in it when I found two in one day. I traded one for a nice Gettysburg breast plate that I saw dug . these are rare & prised bullets. Thanks for looking. HH

There Gardiner explosive bullets. The federal government bought 125000 of them to try out in 1863. I have dug three of those out of the 125000 that was bought. Rare bullets. Thanks for asking. HH

3 out of 125,000. Haha. Funny.

EJ the book ready aim fire small arms of the battle of Gettysburg has the info in it. Dean Thomas is the auther . It says the federal government bought 125000 of two calibers & the only battles that saw them used were Chancellorsville & Gettysburg. There acociated with New Hampshire troops. Third corps. That's what I know about them. If you have some history about them I would love to hear it. HH

Fantastic post Digger, this is the kind of information I was hoping we would share when I got this forum up and running. Don't get me wrong, daily finds and chit chat are the biggest part of this forum but little bits of educational, historical information like this is what I find very interesting and keeps me coming back for more.

Thanks for sharing your time and knowledge with us Digger........:clapping:

I just looked at ready aim fire & it said a total of 110000 of them.

I hunt a couple of 3rd corps camps. I found two at one of them & one at another. There about five miles apart. The second New Hampshire regiment brang 14000 rounds with them to Gettysburg. Berney was the commander. They got beat up in the peach orchard at Gettysburg. Old Dan Sickles got them in some kind of a predicament didn't he.

Anyone know if these bullets actually worked? I'm guessing no just because of the limited number maid? Maybe they weren't reliable?

I was told if the soldiers got hit in the cartridge box it would set them all off. I was also told that they dumped them as soon as they for them. I heard a story that a wounded soldier had them a Gettysburg & got hit in his box. He laid there & they would go off making him move & shake. The soldiers in sight of him replaced there ammo & didn't want anything to do with that kind of ammo. I don't know if its a wives tail or not. My friends dad was a old digger that hunted Gettysburg in the seventies & found a couple of them. One dropped one shot with the nose blown out. He hunted a place called fantacy land. Its now park. HH

Cool information, yea getting hit in the cartridge box probably would have been bad. The stories seem pretty logical to me. Thanks for the reply they are neat bullets!...HH

Thanks buddy. I would have never four these on my own. I have a friend that took me under his wings when I first started relic hunting. I owe everything to him. Little TeX Stoerzinger. He's the one who started it all with me. His dad TeX Stoerzinger took him digging when it was good hunting. I've heard of double eagle detectors & BFO type in story's. Gota love this hobby guys. HH Tim
