Have you ever had hostility from people while You Detect.

I would like to know if anyone else has met hostile people while you Metal Detect. I find dog walkers to be mostly ok , but some Dog Walkers have been hostile and one maniac wanted to punch.
Don't get me wrong 99% of people are Fine with me detecting but i have met Nasty Dog Walkers . Nasty Grass Cutter Men , 1 Nasty insane farmer on a footpath. Most of them hate the hole.
Are you digging the field up is something i have heard them say a few times.

Not in the last 20 years. Are you digging a soccer field or public park with a relic shovel?
 
For the most part the people I encounter are either curious or think a detectorist is just a homeless person looking for a little spare change but they're mistaken , I do have a home. The only ones I seem to consistently run a foul of are , you guessed it , middle age teachers with that middle age spread. Even though the property uses the word"public" in it's description , those NEA socialism promoting members all seem to think the schools are their own little fiefdoms. I have met with the public schools police force members who on all occasions have better things to do and make a point of telling me that but have to make an appearance to placate these psychos. They have "to the badge" told me they appreciate having an honest and trustworthy set of eyes present at the property while we are there instead of the normal vandals but the teachers are a lost cause , so are most of the students they preach to.:(
 
I asked because some people do use relic shovels in parks, schools, and sports fields. Yes, I know that a nice plug can be dug with a relic shovel, but the Karens of the world don't care.
They will run right up to city hall and complain. Next thing you know, there's an ordinance that bans detecting on "city" property.
 
I was detecting in a city recreational area in NC. I was not near the soccer fields. Atctully was in a tot lot. Was approached and told that i could not detect i that area as the city had passed an ordnance plrohititing detecting on any city owned property. hE SAID THE REASON WAS THT GUYS WERE DIGGING UP THE SOCCER FIELDS WITH SHOVELS. He noioced my digging tool and said just dont go on the fields and dont ldig any deep holes.
He was telling the truth about the city ordnance. I found three silver items and some clad in the tot lot.
 
Yes ftom police officers! We had one that sent a rookie 20 something yo over to ask what me and a friend were doing?
We were at a private school right next to the police station well he left then his Sargent came over and asked my friend who’s a Ex state cop!
He started screaming at Gary as Gary knew him and tried telling him who he was but now Gary has long hair! Gary said hey it’s me Gary Ingles
The cop screaming at him said I don’t care who the F$;k you are I’ll arrest you! Unbelievable unprofessional I should have filed it and turned it over to his supervisor!
Total jerk of a cop!

Two times for me. A gang of well built young males surrounded my friend while I was in the Port A John. When I came out I just smiled, (scared on the inside) and one guy asked me what we were doing. I told him how old that park was and what we were looking for, then he smiled. He said something to them and they left. I didn’t go back there for a long time.
The second time was strange. I just got out of the car and had my detector in hand. This strange guy runs towards the grass ahead of us and tosses a bagel at my friends head, then at me. I caught the bagel and threw it back at him. He said something like we were dangerous and he left , thank God.
Oh last one - a four foot snake feel out of a tree and hit me in the head. It slithered away so fast, I didn’t see where it went. Probably because I was shaking so much!

Had a homeless woman start yelling "You're stealing our money" . . .I just detected past her a little quicker and uncovered one ear. There were about 5 men with her . . (((RUN))))!!

I was in the middle of a woods on my knees digging for a target and was jumped by a dog. For some reason I didn't get a rush. He just wanted to play and maybe he saw a fellow digger. Ends up, a guy was walking his dog off leash. I played with him a few seconds then his master called him.

Most Rangers are OK. Every once in a while one comes along with a crappy attitude looking for something wrong. I always have my permit along with my shi7 eating grin on my face. . . .tough to get rid of that when an a$$hole shows up.

I love it when detectorists show up and yell " You're not going to find anything there, it's all fill dirt"!!! My mind immediately say "a$$hole". They say something like "I've been detecting this spot for 15 years and cleaned it out". . . . Meanwhile, 15 minutes earlier, I dug a King George. I don't have time for bozos like this. If you want to talk detecting like adults, I'll turn off the unit and shoot the breeze for a while. . . . . but don't confront me all aggressive like, dude.

Cell phone has changed our kids minds and ourselves. A terrible revolution. My wife didn't look at the game only her phone.

I would be shit scared of those american cops ,They seem to be desperate to shoot people dead. They lift the flap off the top of that holster every time they pull a car over
that is scary. They came out to a first amendment auditor with 5 cop cars just for him filming ,looks like there are five times as many cops there more than they need to be.
20 cop cars chasing a man in a nicked car lol thats not uncommon too. :lol:
 
I had someone call the cops on me. When the lady cop arrived, she asked me if I was ok??? I said yes, why? She said someone called in a welfare check because they said it looked like I kept falling down lol....We both laughed and she drove off.
 
Friendly Aggression: Back about 11 years ago... my club was hunting a local park... I had set my whites 6000 di pro/sl against a tree while a few of us were comparing finds... In my case.... it was the usual bits of chopped up cans... and bottle caps... A dog off his leash (beautiful ditsy golden retriever) came bouncing along an knocked the 6000 over.... which then ceased to work:sick2:... the owner was sorry and briefly interested in metal detecting...and blah blah blah leashed the dog and left... when I finally sucked it up and did surgery on the 6000... I found the impact had shattered the DISC Potentiometer at the back of the unit... And.... it was a weird little guy.. 🦔 I couldn't get it from whites at that time... I finally found... of all things... the same POT was used in electric guitars... Crazy right????.... 14.99 including shipping... got it installed... and I still use my 6000 dime finder to this day... Lesson Learned: Always Keep A Hand On The Detector 👋

Bullshit sir.

30+ years of law enforcement. Not once have I known an officer desperate to shoot anyone (or be in a lethal encounter in the first place). You might be surprised to know, there's a bunch of us that metal detect. We metal detect for the same reasons as everyone here, share the same joys and frustrations as everyone else here. When authority is abused, we don't like it either.
