Has anyone ever been mugged while MD? What if anything do you carry for protection?
you carry a gun around on your side everywhere you go. i have hard enough time getting permission to detect, i can't imagine what it would be like if i were to carry a gun on my side. as soon as the property owner saw that, not only would he tell me no, he would probably go inside and call the law.
It is a different world here where I live.
If you carry a handgun out in the open on your side or shoulder holster you are showing respect. Everybody in these parts carry a handgun. If you keep it hidden you would be asking for trouble.
If I ask for permission from somebody I don't know, I leave my handgun on my four-wheeler before walking up to anyones home I don't know.

Plus this is four-wheeler country with Black Bears, Mountain Lions and possibly a thug around the corner. Not having a gun of some type in these parts is considered foolish.
I also keep on my four-wheeler gun rack either my sks or my STG 58 FAL .

Never had that problem but if I feel uncomfortable I take out my digger knife and let it hand by my side in plain view. Plus I have my cell in my pocket.

Here in TX, if you have a concealed permit, you *can not* ever let anyone see it. It must be totally concealed
100% of the time. They are pretty strict on that part. They don't want you scaring all the non gun types..
So this problem would never happen to a true concealed permit holder. The pistil will often be carried
inside the waistband, behind the back if wearing a coat, etc.. It can not ever be visible.
Myself, I don't have a permit yet, so I have to do things a bit different.
IE: I can carry one in my car concealed and loaded as long as I'm in TX.
But... I can't leave the car with it concealed.
So if I leave the car, I have to either not take it, or be at a location which
it is legal to carry open.
When I cross the border into OK, I have to keep it locked in the trunk, with my
ammo up front in the car. They don't have the car carry rule like TX does.
This is one reason why I'm considering getting a permit. That way I can carry
one anywhere I want, in either state. Also, if I get pulled over, if I have a permit,
they don't have to run all the checks on me to see if I'm a felon, etc.
The permit is sort of a "pre-check" as far as the cops are concerned.
They see that permit, and they pretty much assume I'm not a crook, and have a
clean record as far as felonies. If no permit, they will check you out pretty close.
Anyway, the scenario you describe would never happen here, unless you want
your permit yanked. Like I say, they are very strict about that here.

I carry here, but I am a deputy sheriff. If you get the RIGHT pepper spray, it is effective on about 97% of people. We have to get sprayed with it for training, and i can promise you, it sucks. In TN, we have a handgun carry permit and anyone 21 or over can get as long as they are not a convicted felon or have ever been involved in any domestic violence situation. I guess the best advice I can offer is to only hunt in areas where you are comfortable, but crime happens everywhere, so keep a keen eye out, and remember, you have a constitutional right to defend yourself.
