I live in southern Illinois and the ground is hard as a rock. How are U digging threw this stuff? And should we? I stop when I cant shove my tool about 6" with little resistant.

If I had to quit when it got hard I'd be done for the year. I just push harder on my Lesche. Notice the ball on the end it is not just for looks. Rob

There's a guy who hunts all year in Colorado and uses a rock pick or hammer and chisel to get the job done! IMPORTANTLY, he does not dig in grass or fragile environments with that technique as it would be destructive, he is very conscious of things like that. Think woods, piles of dirt, construction areas, etc.

If the ground is super hard, and you're in a park or somewhere, stop and look at whether or not the ground is so hard that you will cause damage. It may not be the case where you are in illinois, but where we hunt in the Mojave desert, digging in many parks would be bad form in June/July/Aug/Sept, as the ground gets hard and the grass is fragile, even when they try to water. It might not recover if the ground is super dry.
