Hand grip shredding

Has anyone else had issues with the rubber on the hand grip shredding and falling apart? I've had my CTX for about 4-5 months and pretty disappointed that this is already happening on a $2k machine. Anyone have any recommendations for fixing or preventing it from happening further? Pretty upset right now.

I have kept mine wrapped with vet tape (available at tractor supply). Easy to remove and leaves no residue.

Dang, I didn't know this happened; will have to keep an eye on mine.
I have used Vetwrap for years on my Safari grip (also makes the grip fatter and more confortable if you use enough) and also endorse it. Be sure to get the 3M brand- some of the lesser stuff is crap and all of it is inexpensive.

I agree the vet wrap is great it is black and 4'' wide, I got mine at fred Meyers in the pet isle also there are these that cover the whole machine including the handle. http://www.pro-tectors.co.uk/product/ctx3030full

Man, you must have a strong grip. I have had the ctx since it was released and haven't had that issue...

One thing that will kill the handgrip.. Putting bug spray on with your hands and then using the detector without washing the bug spray/lotion off. Don't ask me how I know this..lol

I put wound tape found in the first aid and pharmacy depts of drug stores or big box stores and then wrap with bicycle handlebar tape on all my detectors. It protects the original grip and makes it a bit thicker which is more comfortable for my fingers which have a small touch of arthritis.

that's a good point about the bug spray. I have a pair of headphone that kind of melted in places and I have a tendency to just spray bug spray on my head and headphones at the same time. Makes me wonder a bit what it could do to my skin

Be careful with spraying the bug spray near the detector too, I've seen some different kind of screens react to the chemicals in the spray.....you don't want to find out the hard way that may also be the case with the CTX screen!

I would contact ML. If your machine is only 4-5 months old they should warranty it.

Mine has been covered from early on in 3M Super 88 vinyl tape (cheap tape should be avoided)

Easy cleanup, and great grip.

What's bug spray?

Does that work to deflect nosy weird people?

Unfortunately not... They will still come and pester you

Gary is right the spray doesn't work on them...hey I even sprayed my computer screen and the trolls still come back! :starwars:

The back of the handgrip on my 3030 started shredding on the rear surface as well, only after using for about 2 months. I went to Walmart & bought some self adhesive sports wrap in black that makes the handle a lot more comfortable. I rewrap my machine after about 8 or 10 hunts with new material. I also wrapped the joint in the middle of the shaft to keep it from getting dirty & to give extra support to the shaft connection. This works well for me, but I agree, the issue of the shredding on the handle should not happen to begin with!

I have had mine for almost 3 years now and over 1600 hours of use and the handle is almost perfect. Do you wear gloves with some sort of plastic or rubber facing that is reacting, or no gloves and some sort of bug spray on your hands? Curious minds would like to know!

I have had this happen with my Etrac, not my CTX. I had to send my Etrac in to have the screen replaced, my fault, and when I did I asked the technician about replacing the grip. Minelab did this for me but the technician recommended if it were to happen again not to replace the foam grip, but to wrap the grip with the tape that is used to wrap tennis rackets. I tried this and it works perfectly and saves you $$$

I found that I use my off hand to scoop dirt out of holes, keeping my swinging hand clean keeps the grip from shredding. My buddy's ctx grip is shredded cause his hand is always dirty from digging targets.
