This evening a guy who lives down the street from me stopped by. I don't really know him as he lives a good 15 to 16 houses away.

He said he has seen me at the neighborhood school detecting..

He has purchased a 1895 house property about 30 miles west of me... He wanted to know if I would consider detecting it for "HIM" and give him all I find.

Per him his Great, great grandfather once owned the property, and he bought it from a family member. I clarified what he meant by "For HIM"... Yep he wanted everything I found for his keeping.

He said he saw that on a TV show where they detected and gave everything to the home or land owner. And wanted to know if I did it that way..or was part of that group.

I kind of laughed and said. No I detect for myself. And I keep the items. Though I would give him a few choices of the finds. Or if something of real value was found it could be sold and split between us.

He wanted no part of that........ He felt he should get it all like on the shows he has watched... I said "Good Luck with that. Maybe he could contact those guys and they would do it. I felt like a jerk being that way. But come on.. Spend days, and days detecting and give him everything.. I think Not... True story my friends.. Oh he didn't feel like a jerk asking me to hunt it for "HIM"....... He actually wanted to leave his phone number in case I changed my mind... NOT A CHANCE !!!

Didn't sound like a good deal to me LOL

You can tell your neighbor that the guys who give all their finds to the property owner gets paid to find the goodies........now let's talk......

That is funny. I give some of my finds away sometimes. It usually opens more doors. But I never give it all to them. I wouldn't detect if I had to do that.

I'm a coin guy and when I door knock I generally tell the folks that I keep all coins...they can have the rest!

This year I've given up 2 gold rings, a few silver rings, toy cars, a really cool token I actually wanted to keep, and some odds & ends.... Works for me and genrally the folks are more curious about what you find than actually keeping the stuff......

No he wanted it all oneguy .He made that part very clear.......... I made my answer very clear.

Larry:

A nice suggestion for sure.Truth is I was astonished to a degree the guy would even propose such a venture.. Takes all kinds to make the world go around.

I was curious to see how others would have handled this proposition is why I posted it ... I do have to state I wasn't tempted in the least to detect under those terms..

LOL ........It took stupidity, or self absorption on his part to ask in my opinion. I didn't get the feeling he wanted to offer, or give anything for the property inspection with a detector.. He pretty much spelled it out..:spin:........

Yeah....I got that part, just stating MY terms.

"IF" that happened to me, I know that I probably couldn't contain myself and would most likely bust a gut right in his face!!!! The nerve of some of these boneheads out there.......

You could have turned the tables on him by saying "I will detect for you and you can have everything that I find but only if you pay me $25 an hour"

I asked a "Friend" who I have known if I could detect a piece of property that her parents owned many years ago. Her Reply was i get what ever you find. I told her that I would be in touch. I have not said anything more to her and I do not intend to do so.

My thoughts are that I might give you something that I found but I will not detect for you. I think that if they want what "might" be in the dirt then go invest about 1K dollars in machine and accessories. Learn to use the machine then go see what "might" be in the dirt.

n/t

Guess he thought I just like to find it..NOT keep anything I find ............

I would never go hunt an area knowing I was expected to turn over everything I find.. I bet he would have been a shadow the whole time too..

I feel it best I just told him no.... Truth is even if he comes back to me, asking about doing a split type hunt I won't do it now. I think he would be deceptive in his motives..

What a freeloader that guy was!!!! He expected you to travel 30 miles (60 mls; round trip) at your expense use your equiptment and years of metal detecting knowledge and hand over everything you find!!! Red flags would instantly go up and if he wasn't willing to negotiate, I'd walk/run! away and look for another site to detect!!! One thing I would have considered is asking him to give me a refundable deposit (more than the detectors worth) and $50 an hour for the use of the detector and 2 hours at $100 an hour for expert advice for a primer so he might know how to detect!! Me thinks he would laugh and walk away!!
I love to give beach finds away like toy cars (find lots of them) to the children on the beach and other items if people show interest but you have to draw the line at some point with the person that wants all.

Another unintended consequence of that #$&^'n TV show.
Do those two TV idiots realize or even care about the damage they've done and are still doing to the hobby.

I generally say i'd offer up any jewelry or other family personal items but make it clear i keep all coins found when i hunt private property.
I consider keeping something like a family's or their earlier generation's long lost jewelry bad karma, a notch below theft IMO. Just how i feel.

Elton, you did right by walking away from that nut case.

Gollum: "You must help me find my precious"
Bilbo: "What do I get if I find it?"
Gollum "You get to see my precious"
Bilbo "Not interested"

The Hobbit

Guy: Hey Elton, how about you come and detect my old place and give me everything you find?

Elton: Sure! But I have a few stipulations..When I'm finished, I'm going to want to also paint your house, cut your grass, and rotate your tires, all for free of course..

Guy: What! You are bullcrapping me!

Elton: Well, you started it!
Mud

ps, that was funny there Hightone!:lmfao:

Un-fortunately, that's the society we live in to day, wanting something for nothing. One can always use a good laugh and that is exactly what he would have gotten from me if that had happened to me. HH jim tn

Yeah I would of had to chuckle and said no also.... people anymore want something for nothing

He probably thought he was doing you a favor lol that's the sad part

After watching that *%&^&*&$##@-ing tv show, and seeing the size of the holes those guys dig, I wonder why anyone at all would want their land detected.
It looks like a gopher town after they are done.

Amazing that anyone would even ask the question that guy did (and probably not even buy batteries for you.)..
