GTI 2500

No matter what mode I hunt in I get the same size and imaging readings. If I do experience a difference when switching to aother mode then theres a reason which will be seen as soon as I dig. Small aluminum or other unusual targets. Mine seems to be fairly accurate reading coins as size B some shallow dimes show up as size A which is no big fuss. My 1st 50c hit at size b was a 63 franklin 4 inches deep. Other 50c targets at size b usually turn out to be silver dollar sized pieces of cast aluminun. I guess your detector is acting strange no matter where you hunt as ground conditions play a crucial role in how a detector acts. In testing Ive noticed if objects are less than 6 inches apart only the dominant Item will register which is really a coil size issue.

Reggie, do you know of anyone else in your local area that might have a working 2500 that you could compare one after the other on your test garden?

Let me know if you're in Kentucky.

Detail the comparison between the working machine and your machine using the same techniques for approaching the coins in your garden. From what you've said, there should be a specific difference between the two machines that should stand out after repeated trials.

From my understanding, there should really not be a difference in imaging between the 1500 and the 2500. The graphics on the 2500 have been expanded, but the essential information should be the same. Since you had the 1500 I have to ask did you experience similar issues with the 1500?

Perhaps a comparison of those two would suffice to help Garrett understand the issue better.

Best of luck in defining the issue. PM me if you are in KY.

AS I've stated many times correct centering is absolutely crucial with a GTI. The coil has one transmitter and two receivers and the center receiver is only about two inches in diameter. Watching the signal intensity narrows it down pretty much. When I ran the Garrett Classroom years back this was one of the biggest problems for GTI owners. I always told the posters that Garretts ( especially GTI's ) are not like other detecors and if you try to use them like you did other detectors you will only have problems. THese machines have a mind of there own and you can't force them to do what they don't want to do.

Heres my thoughts:
Target ID is off indeed! US coins are rare in Sweden... :crylol:

Disc and All metal are both good for me.
Sizing is good for 8" on coins for me.

Nothing I read in there is really normal for ME, tough that depends on your conditions.:detecting:

Well, the verdict's down. Melinda tells me the technician said that with full sensitivity the machine will not work properly.

It will not consistently i.d., image or give consistent depth readings in all 3 modes if the sensitivity is set to max. Have any of you had this experience with the 2500? The instruction book says nothing about this. Thanks!

Reggie. I tried to duplicate your trouble and could not except that with sensitivity set too high (too high varies with ground conditions, amount of trash in ground, proximity to interference) I get falsing. That is, targets that might indicate steadily at lower sensitivity bounce all over the scale. I generally run my sensitivity at 6.5 -9. 4.5-5.5 around poles, fences or sidewalks with rebar. Today I was in extremely dry ground. I got a nice quarter signal and it imaged to size B at 7 inches. Whenever I get coins imaged properly at 7 inches they usually turn out to be silver but frequently quarters turn out to be pennies I think this is the "halo" effect. Anyway, today I plucked a 1965 quarter out of bone dry earth at 6-8 inches (I didn't measure exactly) and imaging was exactly right on. It was flat on it's side, perfect orientation. Sensitivity was set at 7.0. I was amazed and my little followers were very happy with the deep hole we created because everybody got to scoop some dirt back in.

I do not find the target ID in All Metal reliable much of the time. It is a good indicator but I don't rely on it. If I'm in All Metal I generally dig it all.

Here is my suggestion. Practice detuning the machine. Watch Khouses video. It works great for the 2500 too. You'll be able to pinpoint to within millimeters. With your coil centered right over the target you may find your ID gets better. Depth too.

Good luck with it.

Chris

Thanks, everyone for your replies. Chris, that was mighty accomodating of you to go to that trouble for my question. Now I realize that my problems began when I maxed the sensitivity. We have very little mineralization in Louisiana.
Once I get the machine back I'll try to run it from 7 to 9, except near posts, where I'll reduce it to 4.5 or so.

So I guess you're saying the all metal target identifications are not as accurate as discriminate identifications? That has been my impression over the past couple of months, but I wonder if your experience is the same? Thanks to all. Reggie

Summary. I find:

Target ID accurate in discriminate mode with stock coil. Sensitivity 6-9. Normally 7-8.
Target ID highly accurate in discriminate mode with 4.5'" scorcher coil. Sensitivity 4.5-8. Normally 5-6.
Target ID frequently inaccurate in discriminate mode, usually off at least one or two notches off, with 12.5" imaging coil. Sensitivity 6-9. Normally 7-8. I attribute this to it being so difficult to pinpoint the larger coil. Detuning helps a lot.

Target ID jumpy in All Metal Mode with stock coil but I dig all Non Iron targets anyway. Sensitivity 8-10.
Target ID more stable with 4.5" Scorcher coil in All Metal but when I use the Scorcher in All Metal I dig EVERYTHING even Iron. I do this only in bark chips. Sensitivity 4.5-8.
I have not used the 12.5" coil in All Metal except to see that it works. It located my truck from about 10 feet away.

I rarely hunt with "Search with Image" on. I find it to be much more accurate getting depth and imaging info in pinpoint (treasure imaging) mode. I find the depth and size information I get while pinpointing to be accurate most of the time (more than 80 percent of the time) with poorest result on very deep or tilted coins. This is with either the 4.5" (depth only) or the stock coil. Detuning helps a lot. (I keep saying that.) Depth information is difficult for me using the 12.5" imaging coil, again due to pinpointing inaccuracies which is probably operator error.

Please finish this discussion when you get your 2500 back and let us know what you find.

Chris
