Gt review

You might be interested in this field test by Gary in the UK

He also rates the GT above the Explorer for depth as it gives cleaner signals

There is a few things on this field test that I don't agree on from experience and what I understand. One is the iron mask switch being on or off. Off is good for the beginner that does not want to hear all the little blips you get from good targets close to iron. With it on you will get a noisier detector as it is trying to see good targets mask by iron and you will get some iron that sounds good too. All the older Sovereigns other than the original have had iron mask on all the time, the original and the GT just gave you the option to turn it off. This is explained in the owners manual and for a Explorer user it may seem backward.
On silent search by turning up the threshold in silent search will only give you a louder threshold in all metal when you go to pinpoint and not increase the sensitivity in disc. I understand it just shift the threshold down a little in disc when you have silent search on for those that like to hunt with no threshold. I feel with no threshold you will lose those deeper targets that are just a threshold change plus you don't know if you are going too fast for the area you are in. Great for area where targets are far a few and once you find a area with signals, the switch back to threshold again.
I feel if Gary could have used this GT for a month or 2 I feel the test would have read a little difference on these 2 items as the Sovereigns do take a little while to get used to and understand them to get the most out of them.

Without reading the review, I have read other reviews and tests on that particular site and found that relevent information was left out that could greatly alter the results.

I don't go there anymore because I feel that anything I read there can be seriously skewed.

It's not just that site.....
Most tests that I have read were right here without taking a link. I have yet to see any comarison between detectors or any evaluation of a particular detector that does not leave me skeptical.

I was looking at this review, looks good will have to read it a little closer.

From what I have read so far of this review/field test I can agree with Rick , but will need to read it more closely to make a educated comment.

I prefer using the Sovereign to the Explorer. With the Explorer you tend, or I do anyway, to rely on what the screen tells you rather than rely on sounds as I do with the Sovereign. Depth wise, I reckon they're about the same. What I don't understand is the GT iron mask.

In the off position, it's not off, just reduced. I bought a GT specifically because Minelab claimed on/off iron mask and that's clearly not the case.

This is differnt than the Explorer as with iron mask off, or open screen it will see all metal, with it on you reject what you want by how it is set. Now with the Sovereign with it on it will see good target better in iron and with it off iron will mask a good target, but you have less falsing. On it may false a little more, all the Sovereign other than the original and the GT it was on all the time. All the Sovereigns hate iron and will null on most of it and the rest you can tell by the signal.

I am new to the Sovereign GT, and I am getting back into MDing after a long hiatus....so I have a lot of research to do. I looked the GTI200 and at the Mine Lab SE and I like the feel in my hand of the sovereign over the GTI and or the SE.

I like all of these forums lot's of information to be had.

I have a book "Finding Gold, Sliver, & Coins with the Sovereign & Excalibur Metal Detectors by Clive James Clynick.

Good book any suggestions for other books?

Thank you Andy

I was told there was a Vol#2 also is this correct?

Not sure about volume 2. I only have this one.

There is some very good info in this book, particularly on three of the pages in regards to sensitivity settings.
If you get the book, let me know. I will tell you which pages.

Art not Andy

Sorry about that I should maybe go to a larger font or put on my glasses
When I read these posts.

I've tested various iron objects with iron mask on and iron mask off. I just don't see any difference between the two. I mean, in iron mask off you should hear the iron I reckon!
Still, it's a great machine; probably my favourite!

Oh I forgot Art where did you find his books on line or at a book store?:detecting:

I got this one as one of those extra goodies Kellyco throws in.
I think David Dixie Metal detectors has them. His banner is on the Relic forum.
Some of the other dealers will probably have them too.

Going to check David's site.

Hey Andy or is it Art
Oh well never mind. I put my on the seat in my Motorhome and my buddy sat on them maybe that's why I can't see.

With the iron mask on or off the Sovereign still hate iron. The Sovereign I feel was made more for the coin hunters and we don't want to dig iron.
With Iron mask on it will see good targets closer to iron while it is off it seems to null more on iron so a good target may not be seen as easy. With it on it may false a little more, but a good target like a coin can be seen easier the way I understand it.
Now if you want to dig iron than the Minelab Advantage would be the one you want.
