Ground Balancing the V3i and VX3

Ground Balancing the V3i and VX3

Spectra's automatic ground balance system has a fast-track mode that attempts to balance the system to soil conditions within 20 seconds of turn-on. If you do not begin searching within 20 seconds or the ground is unusually trashy, the detector may not fast-track correctly and you may want to do a manual ground balance:

Believe me you need to do a manual Ground Balance. Some people say that V3i will track to the ground in 15 seconds by itself. If the ground balance is far enough from the ground this may not happen. The more highly mineralized the ground matrix, the more important a good manual GB becomes. Besides a manual ground balance only takes seconds,

I got a ground balance question, let's say I am hunting an old farm house area, the first thing I do is select the program I am going to hunt in and ground balance. my question is while hunting this area I often switch programs, say from coin and jewelry to relics or deep silver, do you think a person should re-ground balance if they switch programs or would it make any difference if you switch programs

Yes you should especially if the gains are different for the programs. Using the same program if you change gains you should redo the G/B. Will the detector work? Will the G/B be correct, maybe, but probably not.

That's why I like the alternate analysis screen, I can switch without worrying about the G/B.

Thanks Rob (IL), I thought that might be the case, cause I noticed whenever I changed programs the detector would act odd or seem a little chatty. And it just dawned on me maybe when I change programs I need to re-ground balance. Thanks again.

Little bits of iron and general trash in many of my spots makes it impossible to get a clean spot. I do try but gotta be honest. Sometimes I just have to run on confidence that AT will cover it. martin

You do seem to have many problems Martin. Just do your best

Rather than unlock tracking, I simply leave the LockTrac on and every 30 minutes or so I ground balance.

Martin you may running with a very high sensitivity. My self noticed when GBalanced correct running a bit hot is not hurting anything besides makes you keeper.

I've learned a lot and am far better now with balancing than I've ever been. It takes less time in finding the cleanest spot, and yes I have cranked down sens settings which has helped a lot in trouble spots. When I get a real pesky GB situation...I decide to follow some advice Bradley posted a long time ago and run with TX boost on and sens gain backed down as low as even 4-6 , or until I get a quiet GB effect. That might be 6 to nine, depending. Depth with boost is still good and I have lots of batteries, but I personally don't see that fast of a discharge with boost anyway.

Everything is getting much better. I really appreciate the help and patience guys. I am finding more silvers than ever before, so I'm doing something right. I've adopted LockTrack being on most always. The V3i is so versatile it is uncanny ;-) martin

It's better to experiment and not follow the leader. Glad you are doing better. Once people learn that they can't use what people in a different part of the country use their problems will decrease. It takes a bit of effort but it is worth it.

I don't use boost much but using the method you described I got a siver 3 pence when nothing else would work.

Another question about ground balancing. I recently bought a DX-1 pinpointer. After I switch to the pinpointer and then back to the coil, the V3i is very erratic. Do I need to reballance after using the pinpointer?
Thanks

Yep, it can happen with the DX1. You are switching between two different coils and they see the ground matrix differently. People who use lock track don't see this problem. I liked the DX1 features but don't use it just because of this issue.

If it doesn't happen for you GREAT. It can happen and has been documented. It also can be caused by the coil seeing air instead of ground while digging. Try to have the main coil lay flat while digging and not pointing into the air.

I have heard in another forum that for the v3i to add the GB offsets its gotta be on auto track for a few minutes and then lock track unless offsets will not be applied. Is that true? Thanks for replying.

NO.

I know I made a post saying that you could run the detector in auto trac before locking but this was to get an average of the ground nbefore locking.

You set the offset before you G/B. You go through the normal G/B procedure and when you let go of the trigger the offset is applied.

Another question with the GB is what the offsets are about and what would that mean if we have a GB Offset +10 or -10. Thanks for replying.

+ 1 or 2 will help you find smaller targets and/or lower conductors.....-1 or 2 will help ya run a little quieter....mineralization....gl and hh!!!!
