Ground Balance

JimL

New member
Upgraded from DFX to V3i and looking for advice. First, I don't exactly get the ground balance procedure. The manual basically says flip button, hold enter, and "pump" the detector 1 to 12 inches. The DFX was pretty obvious in this regard, and I doubt if I'm doing it right.

I can tell the V3i has improved depth and probably discrimination capability. Still I've been digging bolts and corroded junk metal. I need more time to get up to the level I was with the DFX but any advice would be appreciated.

Take your time with it and it will turn out just fine... There are some really good instructional vids on youtube, they helped me quite a bit when I first started with the v3i. Dont allow yourself to get frustrated. I still dig countless nails and bolts hoping that one of them may be a coin that is masked. For all the questionable signals I have dug only one of them has been a silver coin and it was completely repeatable in one direction. If the signal jumps around in the negative and pinpoints off to the side and may hit hardest on the 22.5 dont bother digging it.

But today I had one of those signals that turned out to be a knife handle with a silver plated pommel....

Silver coins repeat their signal.

What actuality do you need help with?

The automatic ground balance system has a fast-track mode that attempts to balance the system to soil conditions within 20 seconds of turn-on. If you do not begin searching within 20 seconds or the ground is unusually trashy, the detector may not fast-track correctly and you may want to do a manual ground balance. I myself don't depend on this.

Here is the procedure.

Thanks, the manual step is what I need help with. I have a bigger problem now: had nothing but trouble with the wireless headphones. Can't get the detector to recognize the headset. Tried changing channels etc. Once I get it working it works, but I'm very frustrated.

If you have your headphones and detector connected once, next time you turn them on, they should find each other. If that's not happening, what is your power level setting? Setting it to 3 should be fine and really not affect battery life that much. Something to try for right now anyway - if you have it set to 1, maybe the module you have just can't put out the power to connect at that power setting. These modules we got seem to have a bit of variability to them, but they *should* work at a setting of 1. (You do need to have the headphones on for them to talk, I'm sure you know that - I've just caught myself a couple times trying to figure out why they weren't working when all I needed to do was press the power button though).

Sounds like you know the procedure for connecting. But I turn on my headphones first. Then set up the channel info that I want to connect to. Make sure the channel you are connecting to shows more green than red. You don't want too much noise interfering with your connection. Then tab down to the connect button and press enter. Then press and hold the power button on the headphones until I hear the 2 sets of tada beeps. They should be connected to that channel.

The power is set at max. I hear one tada not two. The battery power meter is low, about 9. I'll try fresh batteries and see if that does it.

Thanks!

9v has nothing to do with it. The voltage of the phones matters. Try new batteries and it should read 3V.
Set the channel to 4 Is it mostly green or red?
Set power to 3
press and hold button.

If it is any other channel it will not work. It will need a different procedure.

Rob, I think you just confused me. The connect sequence for connecting to a channel should be the same for any channel. (Set channel/power level/speaker options), press connect, then press and hold the WHP power/connect button.

JimL, you said that you only hear one tada. Is it a taDA? Or a TAda (Caps are a higher pitch tone than the lower case). If you are hearing a TAda, you're turning off the phones before they can connect which sounds like you're not holding the button in long enough for it to connect. If you're hearing taDA, then your phones were off, and you just turned them on and you should press and hold the power button (do not release until you get the devices connected - visual indicator on the detector, audio taDA taDA on the phones).

You are correct except that you have to hold the button longer than when just connecting to the factory channel four. I confuse people a lot.

I understand the difference between on and off sounds. The batteries in the headphones are brand new. I'll try channel 4.
