Ground Balance Question

TomH

New member
Folks,

I took the plunge and my CTX arrived yesterday. Cudos to Bart at Big Boys' Hobbies for a great price and a quick delivery. I can't wait to get out to some old sites to see if this machine finds relics that other machines have missed.

My question is...

How often do you ground balance the machine before hunting a new area? I will be working all types of soil conditons, including the fabled "Red Dirt" of VA and it seems that the manual suggests only balancing in highly mineralized soil. Even the soil here in Gettysburg is a bit mineralized and conditions can change several times in the same location. I am wondering if I should ground balance every time or go with the automatic balance.

Any thoughts? Any other relic hunters using the CTX?

Thanks in advance,
TomH

The only time I ground balance is when the sensitivity is below 13 in auto and I switch to ground coin separation, and I watch the sensitivity if it changes a few points I will re
balance at that point so far it has worked well for me here is Pittsburgh at select spots! I was just at Gettysburg last fall and couldn't find a spot to put the coil on the soil...,and that was a heartbreaker!if you would like to hunt with a seasoned Ctx user let me know! I'll gladly make that drive anytime!! Mole ps the only relic I have got so far with the Ctx is a 69 cal Minnie at 8 inches and hit 12-36 in fe coin but we only have one site I can access easily here in Pgh

I would not use the ground balance unless the soil is VERY VERY bad. The machine does a great job adjusting to it by its self. Ground coin might be a good option though!

Thanks for the input gents.

pghmole,

I should have a chance to get out into the dirt by the end of the week and can get an idea for the sensitivity level suggested by the machine. Drop me a PM when you are planning to visit the burg and we can get together.

Bart,

I run into everything from lightly mineralized, dark colored soil that gives up some nice deep signals to traffic cone red colored soil that seems to be powdered iron. Do you agree with pghmole that a lower suggested level in Auto mode would be a hint that it might be time to ground balance?

Thanks again guys. I am upgrading from a bare bones Safari so some of the CTX settings are a bit different from what I am used to.

TomH, congrats on the CTX! Notice your from Gettysburg... Would you be interested in helping a fellow CTX brother find a CW bullet or other item? I have never hunted a CW location, as here in De, there was no known activities. Has always been on my bucket list , but never had an opportunity. Please let me know if you think you can help fulfill my dream. Thanks, Mike

Tom, I hope the weather stops messing around and decides to let us get out this weekend!! Our new toys are nothing but a tease right now....

Derek,

I'm chomping at the bit. It has already gotten boring finding bullets and buttons in my relic room. Its too easy, they're just laying on the carpet. Not much challenge.
