ground balance for salt water

manteo

New member
Hey guys, i am having a problem trying to ground balance my v3i the beach. I wanted to hunt this one spot in the salt water but could get the machine to balance well. the only way was putting the detector on 12.5 high band and my sat lvl to 30 on the expert settings. I aso had my Rx on 8 and dis at 80. The salt competition was on and i was using the 950 coil. Did i make the right adjustment? i feel i was missing targets and my vdi numbers was all over the place. Any other ideas to balance the machine to salt water and getting good depth. thanks all.

i am typing from my cell phone please forgive the type o's

Be sure and set you ground tracking to salt as well. This expands the ground balance range, and then you can trac lock that setting. If you move to a different surface, just do another quick manual balance. You should be able to run in three frequency salt, with no problems. I was just running 14 rx, 60 ac and 80 disc this weekend with the 950 coil at Myrtle beach super smooth like this.

i just got back from the beach and i can't run mt rx any higher then 4 in the water. out of the water i have no problem. The machine is set correctly with ground set to salt and three frequency set to salt. Should i have to run my rx that low to balance?

when you turn down the gain do u loose alot of depth? is it better to turn up the sat and bring the gain up? sorry for all the questions just trying to learn the ins and outs of the machine. thanks again, for the help.

When I was in the water, I had some false signals of +1 on the VDI. In the rapidly moving surf this is hard to deal with. One thing you could try is raising your ground filter, and be sure you do not scrub the coil on the bottom, as this will also give bad signals. In standing pools of salt water I had to swing my coil very, very slowly to avoid false signals, but I still ran my gain up high. This is why in thinking a higher filter may help. I've only had a little experience with the V3i in the salt water. I live 5 hours away from the Beach, so I'll have to work out some more settings next trip. If you find out anything that works, please post :)

when in salt water the best settings i could find was rx 4, and disc was 85. ground tracking was locked and set to salt and i was three frequency salt. i all so using relic because it had better live control and 10 band high. let me know if u find anything better.

OK I was letting you guys talk it over.

A couple of questions why aren't you using the salt beach program?
What do you think adjusting the SAT is doing for you?
Why are you using relic mode ?????
I missed where this troubled beach is located.

To tell the truth, or maybe it's obvious :), I haven't used the V3i on the beach hardly at all. Last weekend I was at Myrtle Beach. SC, and was testing out my V at the edge of the surf. In the stock beach program I was hitting on an eight inch deep quarter I buried, but the VDI was very inconsistent, so I decided to check out some of the other programs with 3 frequency salt turned on. The relic mode turned out to be pretty amazing, as it was hitting the quarter hard and the VDI was spot on. I decided to run it a while this way and found quite a few deep junk targets in the very wet sand. I'm sure there are better ways to do it, but this did work out pretty good with my limited time on the salt. Rob I would definitely appreciate your input. I have been reading your post on the V3i for a long time now, and greatly respect your knowledge of the machine!

Here are some of the finds. The large ring is one of those new Tungsten Carbides that are starting to turn up frequently. It looks to have a small CZ.

I asked some questions.
Why aren't you using the salt beach program? This program has both salt compensations already set for you. I don't know what relic would improve at the beach.

What do you think adjusting the SAT is doing for you? This was to manteno's question, "is it better to turn up the sat and bring the gain up"? SAT has no effect except in the All Metal channel so unless you are pinpointing, or running a mixed mode you aren't changing anything while hunting.

Why are you using relic mode ????? Manteno said, "i all so using relic because it had better live control and 10 band high". You can have any filter and any set of live controls in any programs.

I missed where this troubled beach is located. Still don't have an answer.

My beach experience is on the beaches of Texas.
I never had problems on the Texas beaches. The V3i is not a water machine, if it was it would be waterproof. I only use mine in wet and dry sand. Salt water is just bad on electonics. If you aren't disassembling all the rods and washing in fresh water you asking for trouble. also you need to have at least a plastic bag over the control box. I wear glasses and in a short time salt mist makes seeing a problem, mist must be removed.

If you go in the water the coil must be completely submerged, not on the bottom, and not water splashing over the coil.

Yea, I would agree not to venture out too deep into the water. I mostly detect any water filled low spots on the beach, not actually out in the surf. With these spots, I work them very slow and try not to scrub the bottom as this will cause some false signals. The V3i is way to nice of a machine to accidentally fry in the saltwater. Manteno, I'd say look for the cuts and deep spots on the wet sand, and pound the blanket zone of the dry sand, and you will get plenty of nice finds. If you want to really get out in the water, you may need to look into getting a waterproof unit. There can be some good stuff out there, but you'll still need to look for the eroded areas to really hit the hidden gems :)

Manteo,

You can put whatever live controls you want on any program.

In the search mode of the program you would like to add on to, hit the menu/ tab button twice
Scroll to expert menu then push Enter
Scroll to Configure and press Enter.... This will open up a lot of settings.
Scroll down to live controls and hit Enter again.
This will bring up a sub menu for the live controls.

Now scroll down to Order and press Enter

Now you will see all of the available live controls in red lettering. If you scroll down, you will see { The End}
All of the controls listed above this will be on your live control screen. To add more just scroll down to the one you want and hold Enter on it. Keep holding Enter and use the up arrow key to move it up the list, past { The End}. Now it will be on your live controls. You can do this both ways, either adding or removing. If you drag { The End} to the bottom, all of the items will be on your Live controls. Hope this helps bro!

Hey Rob, sorry i didnt get back to u sooner. i was in aruba when i typed this up. i uses relic because of the live control made it easier to work with. The sat will help with the salt, and i didnt want to go to 12.5 high band because i didn't want to loose depth. I read sat helps when you have mineralized soil so i thought the same if the, salt was different from the ny salt water. Do u think i was having problem because the salt water is different from what i am use to being in ny?

Thanks Mrbanton for the tips on how to,add extra live controls.

plz for give for any type o's i am using my cell phone to type this.
