greetings and advice for newbie

Willie,

I owe you a thanks, and probably many more to come. I am now the proud new owner of a whites GMT. Picked it up off Craigslist for $400. Sweet. I'm off to the White's forum after I thank everyone else for their input.
Cheers,
Greg

Hey guys,

I ended up finding a used (2yr old) never had batteries changed (so I assume little use) Whites GMT. After Willies first post I I read a few reviews of it, and with a beginners knowledge of terms still, fell in love. I did a national Craigslist search and found a guy out of Bozeman MT selling one for $400. I sent him the $ this am and he's shipping today or tomorrow. He#% yeah!! If you guys want to know how to do a national craigslist search, let me know. It's a pretty simple trick, but it works well. Otherwise you have to search one state at a time.

On another note. Man, I feel like a little kid getting something I've been asking Santa for the whole year. Anyway, another note, I found out that our local library now has a historical section for our town, and have found the location of an abandoned graveyard, you wouldn't even know was there anymore, and can't wait till a foot or so of snow melts to go check it out. Hopefully the ground isn't too frozen. But, I don't know how you guys find prospects and thought I'd share the library may be good. My library had an entire section already devoted to town history. Pretty nice.

I also have questions about airline travel advice with a detector if anyone has any tips to prevent damage to my new baby. and lastly, tips for (remember a beginner) someone that will be going to the sarasota area in FL a few days after getting their 1st detector and will be giong to the beach (gulf side) and need to spend time with the kids while the wife gets beautiful in the sun.
Cheers,
Greg

Hey there folks. Thanks for the good wishes and all the best to you guys too. That's one killer deal you made Greg, but there are 2 things to consider. the first is that the GMT is a nightmare detector to use for coin hunting. The same sensitivity that makes it a superlative nugget detector works against it when going through a buch of trash.. though a person COULD turn the threshold down a LOT and play with the sensitivity, while turning the iron 'grunt' on. Depth would be sacrificed though. I totally forgot about the old Tesoros, my favorite being the Toltec II. They can be had for a decent price and would complement the GMT nicely.
A second thing I'd like to mention is to be careful when it comes to graveyards and such. We're talking emotionally charged stuff here and cultural taboos. There might also be legal aspects.. I dunno. Detecting the grass for dropped coins and such, I don't see much of a problem, though others might; digging down into the graves themselves is a whole different ball of wax. I'm not saying that you will or won't (don't know you from Jack), but just figured that I'd bring it up.
As for the Garrett Scorpion, I really liked using it and found it to be a top notch performer.. it's just that antiquated battery scheme that gets my goat. C'mon Garrett, you can do much better than that! After I traded the Scorpion to my buddy Jim (for a Gold Bug) he went ahead and whupped my a** for years with that thing when it came to finds. Here I had all these fancy units and couldn't eclipse him and that old Garrett. Granted, a lot has to do with the operator and familiarity with the machine.. and hunting style. I did the thing to my buddy Rattlesnake Dave using an old Tesoro Golden Sabre (metal box) vs his Garrett GTAX 750. Boy, did I put the hurt on him! His high tech unit bested by an old single tone beeper. Thing is, I knew that detector inside and out, and that made all the difference in the world.
Anyway, it's cold and nasty here and can't wait till it warms up. I have my new used F75 to play around with and am just itchin' to get out. HH.. Willy.

you defenetly want to consider the wight of the detector > i found my white m-6 at 4 lbs gave me a burn in my back that shut me down i now use a tesoro 2.2 punds you would be suprized how that 4 punds will get heavy fast even thou it may feel really light at first my recomendation is a tesor vaquero , or a x terra 70 unless you only plan on hunting an hour at a time then a dfx or a minlabe explorer would do well

That's funny Willy,
Yeah, I'd never go grave diggin. I understand your concern. My main point with it was the local library for historical info, most of you experienced guys probably already know this. Thanks for the heads up with the GMT. If I can find a decent coin/relic hunter for $1-2, I'll have to pick it up also. I did pretty good with my "urban Prospecting" ALmost 20g after I precipitated out the Au. Woo Hoo!! I"ll let you know what I decide there. Any advice with the wife? Just kidding. Gotta run. Getting buried in snow and if I'm gonna be stuck, I want to be at home with the family, not with a bunch of dudes at friggin work. I'll log in over the weekend and hopefully find another tool to take to Fl with me. since I assume that's where I want a relic/coin detecting unit. When you gave the tips earlier, about using the GMT for coinage, you mentioned I'd sacrifice depth. Any idea how far down I'd still be able to go if I did use this advice?

Cheers,
Greg

Hey guys,
Is there a different head I could just buy to put on the GMT that will make it a better relic/coin detector? I'm gonna have to find options in the $100-$200 range since I topped the highest of the budget on the GMT. Can't wait to post my finds from the beach. I'll be in the sarasota area.

Thanks,
Greg

Instead of buying another coil, get a dedicated coin machine or crossover unit. For $200 there are quite a few to be had, especially if you go used. Tesoros , especially the older ones, are good choices and the audio (so I've heard) is more informative. A lot of them can be used for nuggethunting if needful. They won't beat the GMT on small stuff, and maybe not even depth, but can be used if in a bind. Truly, I like to have at least 2 detectors since you never know when one will bite the biscuit and leave you high and dry. One thing you can do with the GMT is to hunt 'micro-jewelry' that other detectors miss. Some can be pretty valuable indeed. ..Willy.

I have been a gold prospector for a few years and the first thing I would say is if your going out to detect for gold the first thing you are going to need to find out is what kind of gold is in the area you are looking. If you are in an area where the nuggets are down deep then the VLF's are not going to find you much. ( I know this from experience) but if its wash piles or gold on shallow bed rock than a VLF is the ticket. where I hunt the gold is pretty deep sometimes 2 feet down so when I switched to my GP extreme it worked wonders. if you are looking for a detector that will get the smaller shallow nuggets as well as some 8 or 9 inch nuggets then I would say you cant go wrong with the gold bug series from fisher the 1 or the 2 are very capable machines.
