Got To Be a BETTER WAY?

HIGH HO SILVER

New member
Got a new Etrac a few weeks ago, had plenty of experience with the Explorer 2 and other MD's a decade ago. I discovered an older park and take a little day trip to check it out. Not a very nice day, cloudy, temperatures hovering slightly above freezing and breezy. Not too bad so far; picked up a few wheaties and a couple of silver Rosies. Stumbled across what was probably an old picnic site based on all the trash in the ground the detector is picking up. From past experience; I've pulled many Mercuries, Barbers and Indian's out of extremely heavy trash areas with my little 5" Excellerator E coil.

There's got to be a faster and more efficient way to swap out coils on the Etrac I haven't figured out yet? I'm using a bowling pin shaped lead fishing weight on a piece of string and pulling the coil wire through the shaft to change out the coil. When you're sitting there doing that and your hands are numb from the cold, etc. The thought occurred to me there's got to be a better way to conveniently swap out coils? Your thoughts and suggestions?

I could bring another detector along with an alternate coil installed. But most all old parks I hunt are now in what has become high crime areas, so I don't want to leave anything of value in my pickup truck.

This might seem a bit odd, but the way I swap out coils relatively fast is to insert the coiled wire in as far as possible with the two PCs of the shaft in the shortest position (slid together) then I take the coil in my left hand and the shaft in my right hand keeping them close together and I do a short but fast flick of my wrist and right arm to use the force of throwing to propel the coiled wire with the metal connector down the shaft. usually a couple flicks of the wrist is all it takes. Hope that was clear enough to understand. Good luck and Happy hunting.

Spare lower rod helps a lot.

X-1 is the best if you can find one.

Sunray X-1 Probe......

Yeah I've been searching far and wide for one with no luck. Ebay has two and they're beat up and she wants $325.00 and $350.00 respectively. I don't need a beat up one for that price.

Check with the original poster. He says he has several available.

Either suggestion will certainly work. Some of these coil cables get a little stretched, malformed and “funny” after being pulled and yanked out of shape over time. Having a dedicated rod-coil setup to just interchange is really nice,as is the X-1 for more reasons than just this one. I hunt a lot of trashy areas for the same reasons as you...that’s where a lot of coins are! The only way to know with a Carrot or similar if you have a coin in the hole is to remove all metal from it. This can be TEDIOUS! I know you are aware of this benefit but until you’ve actually used it and realized the effectiveness, you’ll still be doing the same. I know this is about changing coils, but I’m just trying to push you in the direction of finding a nice X-1. Normally, extra coils are set up on lower rods and just swapped out to the switch box as needed...again,likely already known by you being an FBS user. I’m just trying to emphasize the upside, the downside being,well...buying it. Simply getting the extra rods will also suit the purpose, but don’t forget they don’t give those away either...albeit cheaper than an X-1.

Thanks! The post is about a year old, but I sent Bayard a PM to inquire about one. I had one on my Explorer II a decade ago and loved it. At my old age now weight has become an issue swinging. Guess after I get a X-1 probe I'll get a "swingy thingy" to relieve some weight on my arm. I'll have so many gizmos and gadgets on my MD, maybe next up is a cold drink holder on the shaft

Sure is nice getting back into it again. The other day I pulled a couple of silver Rosies and a Mercury up from the proverbial hunted out park. About forgot the thrill of seeing the glint of silver in a clod of dirt.

There's some nice turn of the century homes around here I'd like to hunt. My people communication skills are not the best. I need to come up with a better address when I go door knocking to ask permission to detect their property. Rather than, "Hi, my name is Dennis. Can I dig a bunch of holes on your nice lawn and take what's in it?

 I have similar people skills which degrade quickly if I figure out they’re a complete douche. Since you’ve had an X-1 then I’ll skip right to the part where I carry mine in my pocket. A good pair of cargo pants goes a long way! Probes, cigarettes,keys,wallet....did I mention that a BELT comes in handy? Anyway....I’m becoming way less about NUMBERS as opposed to the challenge of being able to find stuff in places that have been dead forever. Again,it’s an ego thing...”am I better than them”? When I am,it’s a successful hunt.

That post has been around for awhile, but he just responded to an inquiry about still having several X-1's on hand. Although I really like using a SunRay probe, the extra weight on the shaft just doesn't work for me anymore. The lighter, the better these days...

If you do not have extra rods or a Sunray probe,,, then with your right hand pinch the cord tight where it cant twist. With your left hand push and twist the rod in a direction that would make the coils tighter. As they tighten up due to friction they will also begin to slide a bit forward. I can get a cord thru a rod in just a few seconds every time.

There are some coils that the cable is WAY distorted from prior abuse or excessive pulling and now are going to be an SOB to route without pulling a shoestring through with it,or something similar. But like TF said,a cable in good shape can be run through just in this way.

Just fit the smaller coil before you leave home, and enjoy a fabulous days detecting....I promise you!......matt

high plains called it, also a touch of baby powder will help ease the coil through the shaft. just dont get it wet.
