Got Chased out of a Park today

What's with people?? The friendly detectorist who is out having healthy fun while getting a high from finding a silver coin or neat relic should be the LEAST of people's worries. Some people are just ignorant and full of fear.

People do fear what they do not or can not understand...THAT wil remain true until the end of time...

HH,

Wow!!
I had a mother come up to me an ask how long her son was watching me i said about a half hour as i dug. She got so up set about it she stated that he comes to this park an i should not be playing with her son. I told her it was a public park an i had just as much right as everyone esle. then i spoke to her that his cousin was sitting on the bench watching me. so what did i do wrong this just happened last month. she was no where around to watch her son but i think he came home an told her he was watching this guy dig an she got concerned but i hate to admit this but i was in a black neighbor hood an maybe she felt threatened that i was white . We have a lot of problems in our city with this issue fact it made nationalk news back in the 70s an in the last couple of years. now here is the kicker you al might think is how wrong i might have been. The boy another boy sat on the garage roof an swore at me an called me all kinds of names. an said i suck c.... i tried to ignore them as best i could . They would yell an then run off. an this was the same boy of maybe 10 or so who was standing around asking me questions as i worked . go figure!!!!!!

Another thing to consider - don't take a knife on to a school ground. I only go to schools on weekends and holidays but I leave the hunting knife in the car.

At parks, I've been really lucky, I guess, but everyone I've encountered has been courteous, even the kids who ask questions about what I'm doing.

I ALWAYS have 3 knives on me...One 4" folding on my pack shoulder strap (showing), One 3" multi on a clip on my belt (showing), and one 3" Tanto in a pocket on my other shoulder strap (hidden)...If they scare you GOOD!!! They are meant to...if you are frightened, why did you approach me to tell me???
Just more things to make ya go Hmmmmm....

Hard to believe that ANYONE would be threatened by me...I'm 67 years old, I'm about 5'7" and weigh just under 140. Most of my life I've wished that I appeared MORE threatening! Cripes, that woman outweighed me by 30 pounds and was 2 or 3 inches taller than me. I'm the one that should have been nervous!

Lol...Crack me up Mrgee. That was funny. Gotta happen sooner or later. Happy hunting.

Thank you all for your comments. While I agree that when I'm in a tot lot and kids show up, I usually move somewhere else but on this occasion I was within 10 minutes or so of finishing up and they were at the opposite end of a large area. I figured that I would finish up and be on my way. As far as vacating a park whenever kids show up, it's a public park and I'm the public. If they don't like it - tough. I find that most kids are curious about what you're doing but they are easily bored. If they watch for a few minutes without my finding anything, they wander off. Anyhow, thanks again for all your comments and suggestions.

All good Mrg. Its plain to see that you (and others on this site) are curtious in these situations as am i. Discretion plays a big part. Normally if i see more than 2 people on site i just go somewhere else. And yes the mums are just systamatically cautious about anyone buzzing round there offspring regardless. Its a built in thing. Happy hunting.

Interesting...I never gave the charity thing a thought, but now, It sounds so good...You could donate to ANY charity that sounds good..."Clad for Cancer", "Change for Change", "Loot for Leukemia"...The list is endless, and no money lost, because as stated, you can claim it on taxes with a receipt...GREAT IDEA!!!

HH,

Since i posted about shop with a cop ....i got a call from one of the officers that is head over the event...he invited me to come be a part of the event during the day they take kids shopping ..told him i would be happy too..couple buddies i know that detect has agreed this next year they are donating their clad also..not only parks but this could also gain permission on private land that other wise would not consider it ...maybe this is something that can get started nationwide for charity's by clubs and individuals..may gain alot of respect and alot more areas to hunt

Funny,

One time I was questioned by law enforcement at my local city park that taken down my name and address. He didn't ask me to leave but I did anyway because I didn't need the drama. My latest run in was with soccer field maintenace crews that were afraid I was going to dig up their sprinkler heads.
