Gold Jewelry markings and what they mean

Steve from Ohio

New member
Here are the percentages and karats.....

10k gold = 41.7% gold

12k gold= 50% gold

14k gold = 58.3% gold

18k gold = 75% gold

24k gold = 100% gold

Here are the European markings:

18K gold is marked 750 to indicate 75% gold
14K gold is marked 585 for 58.5%
10K gold is marked 417 for 41.7%

Metals that are added to gold can change the color of gold and make the gold better for working into jewelry.
Some of the more common metals mixed with gold is Nickel, Palladium, Copper and Silver.

Oh and to tell if a Rolex is real or a knockoff......the real Rolex second hand is smooth. All the knockoffs have a second hand that stops each second as it sweeps around the dial. If the Rolex does not work, then a trip to a jeweler is in order. Fixing a Rolex is not cheap.

Heres a few more

8k Gold = 333 33.3% German minumum
9k Gold = 375 37.5% UK minimum
14.8k Gold = 620 62% Minimum for dental gold
19.2k Gold = 800 80% Standard for portugal
21k Gold = 875 87.5% Found in Arabic countries
22k Gold = 916 91.6%
24 k Gold = 990 99%
24k gold =999 99.9%

This is a false statement Steve, "Oh and to tell if a Rolex is real or a knockoff......the real Rolex second hand is smooth. All the knockoffs have a second hand that stops each second as it sweeps around the dial." I have had knockoffs with a sweeping hand, JUST like the real deal. Paid about $200 fer it new, just an fyi.

Thanks Gulf Hunter for the info. I was told that by a jeweler. Hmmmm...... I'll take your word for it. It could be that SOME of the knock offs have a second hand that stops. .I'll have to ask him about his information. Not that I ever found one yet.....but you never know!

Then how can you tell the real deal from the fake? Maybe open it up to see the inside?

Here is a site for those who think they may have found a Rolex........and not sure if it is a real Rolex or a fake
