Well, I called the Whittemore Prescott High School on the 1980 class ring I found and no reply. So I called the Iosco County News to see if I could put in a lost and found classified. They sent me to a reporter and I will be featured in their newspaper on the 27th of this month. I lost count after returning over 30 rings and 2 ID bracelets. I know CJ has me beat!! I don't think I will ever catch him.

Don't worry all you northern Michigan hunters, I found it in Oakland County, BUT after I retire ALL of Michigan is in my crosshairs!!!!

How does it feel to be famous ?

Found the owner and called her. She wasn't very enthused. She did say "So are you going to mail my ring back to me?" Since I have been BURNED at least twice, one to Pennsylvania, one to North Carolina, I asked her to send me 5.35 for the lowest priority box FIRST, and gave her my work address. I spend 5.00 for a tank of air, and gas to get to my spots and my time. I am NOT going to be out shipping also.

The one to North Carolina was a pilots ring from the USAF. He became a pilot in 1947. He died in 2002 BUT, his son with the same last name was also a pilot and a retired LT Colonal in the USAF. I spent two years tracking the family down. Well I sent the ring out and never heard a word back. Not even a thank you.

For any that might think I should just ship it, I just don't have extra cash to give away right now.

If she sends me the postage she will get the ring, if not it gets melted.

Nothing wrong with your attitude there SD.....you at least found it for her and made the effort to locate her for the return.
The rest is up to her the way I see it. Gold Nuggets :wiggle:

I agree with you. If she wants the ring back bad enough, she should pay for the postage. 5 dollars here, 5 dollars there, adds up after a while and our generosity has it limits when it starts to eat into our pockets.

Yup I am with you on this one... happened to me three times... not even a thank you. Last one I was actually looking for a lost wedding ring with a promise of a reward (I did not ask for one) I spent three days on scuba looking for it and found it, sent it to his address (cost me $10 shipping) forgot about it and a couple month later remembered I should check up to see if he received it! Face booked him and yup received it a long time ago. Made a comment to me "I am surprised you did not keep it, most people would have". Still no real thank you. I would have been better off spending 3 days hunting on something I would have at least made me a buck.... just sayin not trying to be greedy but I do have over $4000 invested in equipment that does take money to maintain :(

Kudos on tracking down the previous owner's, but these responses you folks are getting from the owners are crazy! Maybe you should start a "pickup only" policy!! Give them 30 days then it's off to the scrap yard... I found a WWII dogtag and tracked down the owner's son as the owner had passed. He made a four hour drive to the West side of the state to pick it up and was ecstatic to get it. It's still one of my best finds, but more because of the look on his face when he got it than any monetary value, you could tell he really appreciated it.

After mailing back a couple of phones at my expense,i did the same ....send me the postage, ill send the phone!!

If I am asked to find a ring etc. I no longer hesitate to ask for a donation toward the cost of new batteries and found to my delight that some people feel larger sums are satisfactory when I leave the amount up to them. (These are folks who can afford larger amounts of course.)

Of course the wedding band I traveled a half hour to recover last year, which brought shouts of joy from the owner (and he even gave me a hug) resulted in a cool beer and a hearty handshake!! He promised a gift certificate to a nice seafood place for my wife and me, but it must be lost in the mail!!

As for you catching up with my total SD, you are much more active than I at this point in my hunting experience.

That means that when you have as many years at it as I have your totals will far surpass mine.

GL&HH Friend,

CJ

CJ. I know only TOO WELL about promised rewards. When my wife was dying, I sometimes played in a park a block from my home while she was asleep. I was her caregiver and had no job. One morning a guy was there that knew about a lady that lost a wedding set in a private pond. He said there was a 300.00 reward for it. I talked it over with my wife and hospice, Hospice had a worker come over to be with her while I searched for it. Took me all of about 15 minutes and I found both rings. They said they had no money then but would get the reward to me. I NEVER saw a cent. That was in 2006.

Yes I am active and I supplement my income which is practically NIL in the summer by diving. I bought 6 air cards in the winter so I could fill my tanks up 60 times. I also got all my tanks visualised and 4 hydro'ed so I could have them all this summer. I am getting my boat back tomorrow and excited to get out to some of my old haunts.

I believe in karma. I do believe I find more class rings because I try to do the right thing and return them. I am just refusing to loose any more money in returning them by also forking our shipping costs. They can come pick them up or pay for me to mail them off.

Here is a GOOD LAUGH. About 3 years ago while diving, I found a high school championship football ring from a high school in California. I found the owner, he lives in Park City Utah. He just happens to be the grandson of a former Governor of Michigan and is the nephew of Mitt Romney. If anybody knows about Park City, Utah, it is multi million dollar homes and is the most famous ski resort town in Utah. and if anybody knows about the Romney's LOL well they have a few pennies!! Anyway, He flies to Detroit WITH his wife and two teenage sons and rents a SUV to come to my town which is about 80 miles away from the airport to get his ring. I give it back and was promised a reward cause he had no money at the time. I never saw one!! It used to bother me but now I laugh. LOL I do have his picture with the ring!!

Everyone have fun out there!!!

All of you guys doing the right thing have my admiration. Always liked the return stories. I believe in karma also-but I'm not really thrilled with the karmic return in the past 15 years.
To me-the bottom line is that it should not cost you any money to do something (of this nature) for anyone. You already are giving up time searching and researching --SO it should never even cost you one cent to return a valuable/treasured item to some one.
That's just my opinion. The world has changed. Courtsey and appreciation are rare.

Reminds me of all of the benefits I've done. They can't give you even token money-BUT some one always shows up in a Limo and gets their usual fee. Did plenty for Katrina only to find later that of the 25-30 grand raised = some photo op with some mayor (official) getting a 1000-1500 check. and every body else got fat. Hate that stuff-and it's real hard to get details.

I love getting the look and the attitude whe I state that for such and such "benefit" I'll need at least $23 for gas and tolls (just one example)-------act like I don't care about-cancer,battered women-Katrina etc.

Sorry for the rant. Long way of saying--please don't pay a cent to be generous to people -you are already going above and beyond the actions of most people.

I know how you feel bob as my wife and i are clowns (as some know) in our spare time we ask that people donate to a worthy cause for our clowning services and some do but alot more don't like its differebt from us asking to be payed up front??? some people just don't get it

I was getting my gold ready to ship to ARA Wend. and a check came in the mail. I never heard from her so I was ready to scrap it. So her ring is being mailed today and 2373.00 of gold is going to ARA. That is just shy of 4 grand for the summer now. Hopefully I can stay around 6.

Another class ring going home and it feels good to be able to do that for people.

You are such a good person, trying to return the gold you have found, if anyone says its wrong to expect then to cover postage then they are crazy! If someone contacted me with news like that I would send a present, not just the postage!
It's people like you who give detectorists a good name. Congratulations on making the paper. The book you recommended arrived yesterday, very informative. My regs should be back end of next week, so I'll be back on it soon....

I know romney alright. When he ran for gov of mass, there was a dispute as to whether or not he met the requirements...supposed to be a mass resident. He obviously from utah.

Anyway, he won an in 4 years he tore it up. I won't vote for him. lol. He just...looks to angry. They had $$$ on them. The could have tossed you 20 bucks for lunch, a C note or even more generous...a grand.

You would think they would have. GL an HH.

Good old mit, earned 20 mill in interest alone last year. -Joe
