Ghost Signals? Explained

I dug and dug and dug a GHOST signal today. I finally gave up. The signal started as 1-30 and by the time I quit it was 7-24. I noticed the signal seemed to change locations(now using the X-1 probe) as I removed more soil. That was the tip off. The signal always changes and always moves. I'm sure if I would have continued I would have found a large piece of iron.
