Khouse gave you good advice when he said: "Don't mention digging. Don't mention a shovel or knife. Don't mention...treasure." If someone asks I always say I leave the yard in at least as good condition as I found it, usually better because I pick up any trash I come across.
I always play up the history of what I find, not the value. It sounds like other people who are sucessful at getting permission do the same.
Dahut's idea about business cards sounds like a winner to me too. Business cards make you look more professional and that's always a good thing when you're asking permission.
