Getting A New XP Deus Friday

Mike K (Ohio)

Can anyone give this 20yr minelab user some direction? Something to help shorten the learning curve. I'm gonna guess you can put programs in these and I'm a coin hunter from the US and live in Ohio. Is there a place to maybe pickup some programs or can anyone recommend any videos to help? Thanks Mike K (Ohio) I'm also getting the HF Coil with it as well.. just fyi...

Try Full Tones.Wiggle over the target and pull the coil back and listen. Reactivity is best set at 2 or 2 1/2 and learn the sweep speed, etc. before tweeking it. It's volitile. Unless of course you are in high trash. Oh yeah, don't do high trash for a while. Learn how to control any chatter, that's important. Lots of YTube videos "XP Deus chatter" for instance.

I used my Minelab E-Trac for years and I asked the same questions as you 4 years ago.

What most forum members told me was ...

(1) - Keep it simple - till you get familiar with the Deus - so I just ran in the Basic 1 and Gold Max Power programs - ( made lots of great finds).

(2) - Get Andy's Book - goes into much more detail than the factory manual.

(3) - Watch Gary's Deus video's on youtube - very well done and a great way to learn about your machine.

(4) - Full Tones - Like many others I only run in "Full Tones" - the Deus is more of the "Sound" machine rather than target ID Number machines like the Minelab's.

(5) - Gary's - "Sifter Program" - ( a modified version of the Deus " Fast" program ) I went back and made great finds at over 75% of the heavy iron sites that I though I had hunted out with my E-Trac.
Note - my Deus is 4 years old - there might already be a factory preloaded program similar to Sifter in your newer machine.

After being a Minelab user for so long your really going to enjoy the ultra light weight and very high recovery speed of the Deus !

Good Hunting !

When I started out with the DEUS I ran Deus Fast and Basic 1 for a long time.
My slow brain took a while to grasp the sounds and all of the ways to tweak the Deus.
Start be hitting the Tot Lots and chips to learn the sounds. GO SLOW
The wiggle back on the bottle caps helps. as they fall off the tip they give a iron grunt, but I dig a lot of them anyway.
Andy's book and Gary Blackwell's Deus videos are your best way the get a foot up on the learning curve.
Calabash Digger's videos are a great reference too, although he hunts mostly relics.
Good luck
I know you are going to like it.

Well Getting Everything Charged Up, I have some deep iffy targets I marked this morning using my CTX wanna see what the Deus has to say about them. Anyone ever use Andy's High Trash Program? This place is really Iron infested, Looking for some opinions on what program and freq to use. I'm pretty much a coin and button shooter.

I was reading Andy S book for the Deus and he has this program High Trash Does anyone know of a video out there that can walk me through programming this? These tone breaks are confusing to say the least. I've got the book but just isn't happening. Also which base program is he building that off of? Fast I'm gonna guess Thanks for any help... Mike

Your new Deus will drive you nuts in high trash until you learn what it's saying.
Take your time !!
Start with Basic 1 or Deus fast and hit some easy clean spots, like playgrounds and that sort of stuff until you get comfortable with the sounds.
Everybody wants the end all program, but it all has to do with your environment.
Each change in the programs with effect other settings and how the Deus will respond to a target.
Read the book through a few times... you miss stuff the first time.

Good luck

You're trying to do the two things i said you are better to wait on--high trash, and tweaking.

I went out and hit a recent spot that I worked over pretty well and was using Deus Fast. Didn't find many coins depending on the weather I will have to find some playground areas and search the mulch for easy targets. Just so I know what a good coin sounds like.... Plus it started raining so that didn't help. But all in all I think I will like the machine once I get around 25-30 hours on the coil or until I'm confident I know what a good coin sounds like. Wanna say thanks for everyone taking out a little time to help a new user. I just need to follow what you guys are saying lol....

Got Out For A Couple Hours Trying To Learn This Deus. Used Deus Fast and it was suggested I go somewhere to dig easy targets so I went to beach. I Found Platinum!!! :( To bad it was a Platinum Beer Cap Lol.. Quickly figured out that those caps sound good but if you watch the XY Screen you can see where they wrap around and I was able to pretty much call them from that point. Foil and pull tabs I dug some of those till I figured out how they look on the XY screen. I asked a lady if I could scan her Gold Wedding Ring so I knew what Gold Looked like. It was much cleaner than those pull tabs looked.

Then I went to an old place I search over and over with different detectors over the years and managed 3 wheat backs 1 of which I nicked errrr and 1 Indian all in rough shape. But what I did learn is they were like whispers and the line a on the screen was like only an inch long if that. They all ended up being right around 7-8" mark. Not much to in the way of goodies but I did learn a few things about this XP :) Jeff showed me what a deep target looked like or should look like that's how I knew I might have something good.

I also dug allot of iron pieces not shown but they were like 3-4" big and only about 4" down. They sounded so good and in the XY screen the line went from 2 to 8 a clock position so I never thought it would be iron. Any tips on avoiding iron? I don't dig much iron with my CTX unless I see on the screen that silver and iron are both hitting then I know both are gonna be in that plug. Thanks

Hey Mike welcome to the club of what I personally think is the best machine out there. Ok avoiding iron. I think Basic is the best program for the newbie because it will avoid most iron. Look at the settings on Deus fast . Disc defaults to 6 and iron volume to 3. Both of these will let iron in. This is ok for relic hunters or for experienced guys who want to here some iron. Go to fast and set an iron nail next to a coin. You should here both coming through. Some iron will mask the coin one way so run the machine NSEW. Now look at your XY screen with both objects. Often it will look like iron only. This is why I don't use XY. Now go to Basic. Disc defaults to 10 and iron vol to 0. This will zilch most small iron w/o losing depth. Also reactivity on Fast is too high unless the iron is like poppop and the sensitivity defaults to -1 which turn off your iron disc and also lets you hear more iron. 2/2 is a good all round setting. Pop caps and screw caps will still ring up good but lift up your coil about 6". Good tone? Pass a nice coin won't ring up that deep. Since you have a HF coil try running at a 28 kfz. Will still hit highconductive coins deep but will really hit nickels and gold well. Hope this helps. Paul

Some nice old coins give up to the Deus.

The tone breaks are one of my favorite settings and are not difficult to understand or set, once you understand how it works. Calabash Digger has a good video to show how tone breaks work and how to set them. Check out the video by going to YouTube and doing a search on 'xp deus tone breaks'. The video will come in in the search results.
