Genuine Excalibur Sounds, Recorded From Various Items

Also posted on Beach & Water forum...

Several folks have asked me to repost the Excalibur sounds I had posted here a few months ago. The original post got a lot of hits and I think it got lost when the forum had that server problem.

So here's a link to the WAV files wrapped up in a single ZIP file that you can download and listen to all you want. These files were recorded by me, on the actual items, with my Excalibur using a microphone and Windows Sound Recorder. They're pretty good but I would encourage you to crank up the volume. I had the microphone stuck in one side of the headphones and the Excal volume cranked but the recording level is still pretty low. But turned up they sound good. The names should be self explanatory.

You can "Save" it to your hard drive and unzip it or you can "Run" it from where it is and listen to the sounds one at a time. Be advised that the file is 2.5MB so if you have dial-up slit your wrists now and be done with it. :lol:

The file has moved.......Correct link can be found here

Hey Funky...haven't heard from you in a while. Guess maybe I need to hang out at the BBS forum more, huh?

I'm sure if anybody from Minelab reads these forums (you wonder about that, don't you???) that they are appreciative. But as long as they're busy building great machines I guess anything else is icing on the cake. :)

I thought that maybe if some of those folks that are always asking questions day in and day out and THINKING about getting an Excal could hear the beautiful simplicity of the tones that it might help them. And then also for those folks that maybe haven't found a gold ring yet because perhaps they decided to try something other than "1" on the Disc knob and knocked out all the gold rings. :lol:

HH!

Hey Mike, Thanks for the great recordings. Now, as a relatively new Excal user I have a question. Can you discriminate each of those sounds each time you hear them? There are distinct differences but hearing them in isolation make it very hard to tell the difference. Then, of course depth makes some difference and soil adds some additional variation. I am wondering if you know immediately what you are hearing each time? I'd like to think I will get to that point but now I'm not even close.
Thanks again for your good and helpful work
AL

... because the Excal is a Sovereign modified for underwater use, and the target tones sound the same for both machines. I mention this just in case there are folks on the forum that don't know this.
The Minelab guys check out this forum from time to time Mike, because I mentioned it to Dick in Las Vegas when I sent my Elite in for service, and he knew all about some of the stuff that was posted. I think the GT has changes that came about because of the forums.

but when you hear it in real world conditions there is that flutter that jumps up into your heart when you hear that gold tone and it makes it so exciting , I can hear that over ands over , and I always love that low balky sound of gold .......

Allison, I have a very high accuracy rate with ID'ing my targets by sound, but no...I'm not THAT good. But close. I know the bottlecap every time. I know the nickel MOST of the time, but sometimes I am fooled when it turns out to be a nice medium to heavy gold ring. I know foil MOST of the time but am also sometimes surprised when it turns out to be a nice thin gold/thick diamond ring or a gold chain.

Coins and rings have a "round" sound to them...meaning they are consistent and clean throughout the "sweep", whereas things like pulltabs, beaver tails, and can scraps don't sound as "even". Sometimes a crusty, bubbly zinc penny can sound like a good gold ring target. But MOST of the time I can tell a zinc penny a mile away. And quarters...I always know them, though sometimes get fooled when a nice silver ring pops out. You get the idea.

I did recently tell a new Excal user that was hunting with me to come listen to my targets on the beach as I found them. And I would tell her it was a quarter, nickel, etc. and then dig it and every time it was what I said. After maybe 6 times of calling her over and letting her listen, I had that PERFECT signal...low tone, nice and round sound...probable gold ring...classic signal. I called her over. I said it MIGHT NOT BE, but if there were ever a more perfect gold ring signal, this is it. It was.

Here are a few of my recent Excal beach finds, from this summer. In case you don't hit the Beach & Water forum regularly. All of these had that KILLER sound. :)

My find of the summer...$4000 ring...wife is wearing

Thanks a lot. This gives me something to look forward to as I use the Excal more and more. I sometimes predict what I am hearing but there is no level of confidence at all. The hobby will sure be more fun when I get to that point.
You have some very beautiful finds. For me, so far, no gold or sliver. Just recent coins and one classring.

I'm assuming that you're not discriminating out ANYTHING, right? Because if you do, you knock out the gold as well. I'm sure you know that, but believe it or not there are people who try to knock out trash when they beach hunt. And of course aluminum and gold are one and the same to any metal detector.

Recommended settings:

Disc = 1 (lowest)

Sens = 11 O'clock

Threshold = Slight buzz, like gentle buzz of a bee

Volume = 3/4's to full...nice and loud but not insane

Disc/Pinpoint = Disc

Dig everything until you get GOOD, then dig MOST everything. When you have a high confidence level you can walk over bottlecaps, pennies, and maybe some foil trash.

some may say the gold is a tad different , some think the excal is more defined , to me it they both sound real close, the excal seems to make the gold ''snap'' a bit more .......

Yes, as Adam said, pretty much. The Excal is essentially the same machine electronically, just not waterproof. I think that the only difference is that the Excal has a lesser quality set of headphones than the ones most hunters with a Sovereign would typically have on their machines, so the tonal difference is probably mostly in the headphones. I used my Sovereign Elite with Grey Ghost headphones and when I switched to the Excal the tones were not unfamiliar to me but there was definitely a little different quality to them...maybe a little "raspier", if that makes sense. I guess that's the trade-off for having 100% waterproof headphones.

ah yes the headphones.... of course ........the t_wolves make everthing really snappy and loud .......No wonder my buddys sov. sounds way different ...... sometimes I wonder how I made it this far .......

I remember when you did that. It was LONG before anyone decided to offer a CD, guess you should have done it, eh mate? You would be making the big bucks now, LOL!

Mike, I am really computer illiterate. How do you open this file? When I click on the link, it says the link is broken.
