Gas prices, and detecting............Where do you draw the line.

Used to be one could fill up, jump in the vehicle of choice, and go find a nice almost not touched sight( I said almost) Well at over $4.00 average price per gallon for a lot of us those days are gone, gone, gone, and I do mean gone. Expenses even cut in to our detecting equipment expenditures..Money has to come from somewhere...if you spend it on gas you will not be buying new coils, detectors, or other accessories.

Now it would cost you near $25.00 dollars for a round trip to a few older country setting towns..Maybe more.. Plus factor in the cost of Lunch..Prices you have in the detector, and this hobby is getting expensive even though you find money.. It might be a good thing now if we all teamed up, shared some Gas costs and tried it that way for a while...I am sure there are many detectorists that live near each other, that would be willing to detect with a few other people... Might even make it more fun..

I was thinking if others agreed maybe we could start a detectorist board and we could list our name, city, and e-mail for other people to contact and make arrangements..Good way of making new friends, and a good way of breaking down the high price of detecting.. It's just a thought, and I know there are as many reasons it will not work, as there are it will work....Like I said, just a thought, and maybe a new approach....The alternative is not detect good sights, do it only a once a month trip, or spend a lot on gas and do like we have been doing. Spending a bundle..hey jump in and give your thoughts on it...It might be a dumb idea, it might be a good idea...

gas prices have really cut inot my detecting. i am only going out about once a week maybe and thats to a local area. i still havent bought any new coils. just a new sand scoop i got for a bday present. although i was planning a trip out tomarrow to lake shasta. doubt i will be able to due to the gas prices. it is a good 2-three hours away. my just stay local.

hello everyone, this is gonna be a thought provoking thread here! well my friend xltuser, we are certainly living in trying times. we've all had to make some small sacrifices... i just got rid of my beloved gas guzzling old ford truck. so now i have a pair of 4 cylinders in my driveway. we eat out less often and keep travel to a minimum. olddigger and i occasionally get out together.
but i absolutely refuse to allow the goings - ons in the world around me to deter me from my favorite hobby and pasttime. i NEED to go detecting, and to be alone in the woods or an old house site. it's in my blood, man. just keep the 9 volts and the bug spray coming! that's all i need. all of the wants in my little corner of the world take a quick back seat to my needs.
i think that us carpooling would be a good idea. i'm considering joining a local mder's club. that might help too. of course, distance is a problem for many of us. better yet, let me up the ante: if you or anyone else on here is ever in the richmond, va. area, pm me and i'll see what i can do about getting us a good hunt in. i ain't skeered! hh,

I usually keep at least one detector in my jeep at all times so that I can detect at a moments notice wherever I am. We can't afford to do many special trips to detect so we usually detect near home or slightly adjust our route when we do go into town.. However the flooding here in eastern Iowa has really put a damper on things with the ground being so saturated. We need a few more days of nice weather to dry out enough to be able to dig...

Might even make some good frienships....I know there are drawbacks, but darn there are some plus factors also..
Even making a decent living the strain is here...gas prices can really cut you back..if for no other reason,"just common sense", of not spending the money for long trips,, now if a few chipped in it's a lot less for all...And a lot more fun for all..I regularly detect with 3 4 and sometimes 5 people....makes a difference in your hunts...

I hear you Gray Ghost..........I hope people do think about it..and same goes you ever get up north, pm me we will go detecting.. My thoughts were it's a perfect chance of meeting others, and at the same time take the bite off.........I detect with 4 or 5 others and it's more fun with other people doing the same...

Could be the golden chance of getting together, having fun, meeting new people, and save a little in the process..

Is that close to Arkie Land??

I'll be over shortly if it is.

Just wishful thinking.

Happy Hunting Terri,

Friend, its going to get worse before it gets better.
I'm not psychic but I predict you'll see gas up to $5 per gallon by the end of the year or close to it.....and it will KEEP going up
until the oil companies bring the country down around everyones ears, or until the Gov steps in and says enough!!!!!
Watch! In a few years or longer, unless something is done, we'll look like a third world country with streets filled with
bicycles, motor bikes, and scooters.

If China is smart, and they do have some real smart people there, they will go the way Argintina went and go electric and ethnol.
Very little is spent on oil. They are NOT caught up in the clutches of the Oil giants scewing the life out of people for its own gain.

Yea, I know that there are millions more people in the world, and that the demand for oil is up and that controls prices. No
argumenmt on that, but this could have been prevented YEARS go by companies spending profits on new resources. The lazy SOB's
just didn't care. Now we're all paying.

I've been reired now for two year's and am in the habit of hunting daily and will continue to do so. I am not going to let the price of gas keep me from doing something I thoroughly enjoy. Not to mention, the fresh air and exercise I get from detecting, as well. This, however, is one of the few hobbies that at least goes a ways towards paying for itself. We all may have a limit of what we are willing to pay for gas before we began to curtail our driving to sites, but at least for me, that limit has not been reached yet. Good thought provoking thread, though.:surrender: NOT YET! HH jim tn

Well this weekend me and 3 buddies are going to travel 182 miles to go MD'ng. at a cost of $400 total. $100 each for gas, food, & lodging.

Jim tn happy retirement. I have been retired for 8 years and I don't even put a 1,000 miles a month on the car. So I use a good part of mileage on the car each month for detecting. My gas total a week was $10 now it is $40. Like you I can still do it so will keep going. HH....Z

XLT-user you sure have some good posts are you related to TD in any way? Now you got me thinking again and now I smell of wood burning. I don't think it is good for me to think because eyes cloud up, ears plug up and get gas. Good post. Thanks again... Jer

"could have been prevented YEARS go by companies spending profits on new resources."

I just saw something today that suggests this about more than just price gouging. It looks to me like the oil companies have not increased production because they want certain areas open to oil exploration that up until now have been off limits, largely due to conservationists saying no. They rightly guessed that if prices are driven up far enough then the conservationists will get out voted and the artic refuges will be open to drilling. Just today I saw where Bush is pushing to have offshore opened to drilling. When I heard that this price madness had to do with oil companies not increasing production I had to wonder why, when everbody else is increasing production if there's enough demand, would the oil companies hold off increasing their output unless there is some strategic move involved.

We only have our selves to blame.

This town is looking like a ghost

town during the work time. Nobody

goes anywhere if they don't have to.

Happy Hunting,

Yes. I saw that too,....and the Democrats shut him down, at least for now.
It wouldn't be such a bad thing if off shore oil could have been exploited but you can't trust
the oil companies NOT to screw up the environment. Did you know that NOT ONE PENNY
has been paid out by oil companies for the Exxon Valdez accident?
