Garrett XL500

In answer to the question on telling the difference between good and bad targets from the sound. I honestly used the vlf for only about a year. I used the pi model for about 8 or 9 years. I felt bobbie pins and small iron sounded "scratchy", coins seemed to sound different from gold rings and even silver. Many will tell you there is no difference in the sound but I would test myself every time and found I was right most times. I also only worked in the water and dug all targets. My feeling was all the trash I removed meant less targets the next time that were worthless and didn't waste my time finding it again. So like all others before you the more you use your machine the better it will preform. I much prefer the pi version and I think you can pick them up for very little money.

I would like to get back out and work the LX500 again but I just can't do it at this time, perhaps in the future. I enjoy reading about how others have used them in the past, thanks for this thread.

My best day was 10 gold and/or pt rings. HH 73, Mike.

What do you guys think would be the best coil size for the XL500 for ring hunting on the beach? Guess that would depend on how much trash there is to deal with.

The eight inch coil will enable you to get a little more seperation of targets, but a PI on the beach in dry sand is asking for a major workout!

If it is a beach that has had a heavy workout and there are few targets left the large (12" ?) coil may be a better way to go.
