Hi Rc, I have a Garretts Grand Master 7, about the samt thing. They are good coin detectors but the new detectors are much better. If you ate a park hunter for coins they work fine. They have like a bell tone when you hit a coin, i loved that tone. Just give it try and see if you like it. Some did some didn't. Good luck flintstone

If you want to use your Garrett metal detector,it would be best to use it in the VLF all metal mode until you find a target and then switch to TR discriminate to determine what you found. Look for a Garrett Deep Seeker VLF/TR manual online if you don't have one. It should tell you how to operate it. Though heavy and out-dated,it should give you a rudimentary concept of how to metal detect. Avoid buying the Chinese metal detector toys as they are a waste of money. Any entry level unit from Garrett,First Texas,Minelab,Nokta or Quest would be a good place to start.

If you are new to detecting than I would not buy it. There is a lot of controls to learn what they do and I think from the looks of it you will be all ways readjusting it. Like I say if you are new to detecting you want something easy to use or you will get discussed with detecting fast. I bet that this like many more are sitting in closets as people try them and cant figure it out and throw in the closet until they either sell it or give it away. I think myself that those I sold to those starting out I would highly recommend a major brand and a real easy one to use, The Tesoro Compadre is one I sold for them that are new and told them once they learn it it can be upgraded as you go, if you don't like detecting they were easy to resell and get all or most of your money back. Bounty hunter also make some easy to use detectors like the fast tracker that seem to do good and easy to use.
I been detecting since 1973 and at that time it is like walking as you take one step at a time and know some of the older detectors take a lot of time to readjust the threshold as those not are auto adjusting like they are now and you had to manual adjust , I hear many of these older ones took a lot of battery's also and they don't last long.
Make it easy so you enjoy detecting like so many do.

Stock up on 9 volt batteries. As I recall, they take about 6.
I think mine take 9 9v. They last a long time, but to get started big out lay. I sent mine to garretts and had it all truned up, and put it in the hard cast and have not used it for about 10 years. One day someone will find it and see how the old detectors worked.
