Garrett AT PRO lac ks threshhold adjustment

n/t

would be that we find the AT hasn't fully replaced the some time superior functionality of threshold based true all metal which will just give them the opportunity to include it in the next of the series. How would one expand above the level of "pro"? In any given situation there are thousands of "pro's" but relatively only a few are ELITE pro's. You got it...Garrett AT Pro Elite.:detecting:

By the way, I do not "hate" anyone! I simply noticed that the original Scorpion Gold Stinger has a 10 turn threshold and the new AT PRO does not.

I don't think right now just short of it's release that anyone should compare an all purpose machine to some dedicated machines. Time will tell though? I believe there is a miss conception that an all purpose machine should be as good or better than a dedicated machine. As it looks to me it will perform it's intended duties great! Now if this machine cost $4500 we would expect it to be top of the line in all areas. After all some "gold only" machines cost this much. There has to be a cut off on options verses cost. I'm sure Garrett said in the beginning to their engineers something like this. OK, let's build an all purpose machine that is waterproof with tons of features. Oh by the way it needs to sell for under $600! Now get to work! It's like when the Ace 250 came out. People acted like it cost $1000. Oh it doesn't have the features of my XLT. It's don't have a true all metal mode like my 2500 has. I can't take it into the water like my Excalibur. It won't pick up a flake of gold like my Scorpion.... etc........... Hey it only cost $212!!!!! As far as I can tell Garrett gives us the most features for less money and does it well. Plus stands behind their products. What more do you want?

And it is ( Scorpion Stinger) very hot on rings, especially gold ones. The Stinger was designed for gold hunting, but also does well with clad coins, silver coins and relics. It's a great machine! And it too runs on 15kHz, same as the AT PRO, and many other detectors previously engineered by Garrett in their detectors. Of course if you really want depth, learn the Infinium well, and pull out gold rings at 18 inches and use all the threshold you can master. And I have no idea how deep it will go on larger then coin sized objects, but then that would depend on it's setting, coil size and coil configuration type. There are lots of good choices out there for machines. I can honestly state from experience, that Garrett detectors have always filled the niche for my requirements. But that also included using the right coil, for the right environment using the correct settings. Garrett has always backed their products with superior customer service. I honestly believe that this new machine, the AT PRO will be a very successful detector in most peoples hands. There will however be a bunch who will not be satisfied with it, and that sounds perfectly normal to me.

For those who do purchase the AT PRO, learn it, and learn it well. Know it's limitations and use it within those confines. That's the key to success.....One of the many bonuses bonus is that works great on land and water.

I am comparing the AT Pro with other VLF's: the $800.00 White's MXT, the $800.00 Fisher F70 and the $699.00 Fisher Goldbug Pro, not with 4 or 5 thousand dollar Minelab pulse induction machines!

Fisher Engineer Dave Johnson writes that large gold nuggets are rare and prospecting detectors must find small gold nuggets from one to 10 grains. If the Garrett AT Pro with silent search will find 1 to 10 grain gold nuggets and low grade quartz specimens. the lack of a threshold may not be important. It also needs to handle hot ground. The salt balancing problem is not a good sign, especially for a waterproof detector! But maybe they'll fix that. Otherwise, I may await the release of the hypothetical "AT PRO Elite", with a threshold control and a salt/alkali switch!

I guess the Scorpion Gold Stinger update (The AT Pro) is more or a coin, jewelry and relic machine than the original, which was a gold machine, as was noted above. So it depends on whether you want to prospect with it or use it for other things!

On modern machines the theshold doesn't matter that much like in the old days. basically all it does is establish the audio for pinpoint and all metal. The AT gives a faint sugnal for deep targets and a strong signal for shallow targets. Gone is the faint target audio boost found on some Garrett machines.

Bill

Bill think this is true in the pro mode. In the regular mode all targets give the same loud beep deep or shallow.

Jason

Isn't the Target Audio Boost a positive verses faint/loud (deep/shallow) target response??? In comparison, the Target Audio Boost is what made the 1266x a popular relic machine over the non-boost 1265x.

Zadok you got some strange opinions...like... "The salt balancing problem is not a good sign". The detector is not even out yet and you call it a problem. Garrett doesnt advertise it as a for salt machine...

And..."I guess the Scorpion Gold Stinger update (The AT Pro) is more or a coin, jewelry and relic machine than the original, which was a gold machine". THIS IS NOT A SCORPION UPDATE!!! The Scorpion is still being sold and an upgrade for that I have heard is under way as we speak.

The GTI 2500 is advertised from Garrett as a prospecting machine also, does that mean its a Scorpion update also?

Dave Johnson is a fantastic engineer...and FAST TOO! Wish Garrett was a fast as he is on designing stuff but time will tell how small a nugget the AT PRO WILL GET. My Ace 250 will get a .1 gram nugget at 1 inch. My GTI 2500 gets same nugget at half inch. A DD coil is less sensitive than a concentric so we shall see how this DD coil on the AT PRO does with the higher freq on this same small nugget.

By the way...all those detectors you compared the AT PRO to have an All Metal Mode.. AT PRO does not. THIS IS NOT JUST A PROSPECTING MACHINE IT IS AN ALL TERRAIN MACHINE!

Some people just cant read correctly....:poke:

Apparently I've been misinformed. I read somewhere that the AT Pro was a Scorpion update. If the AT has a boost mode, maybe the threshold isn't important. I thought that most all around machines had an all metal mode? This "all terrain" mode must be new. You're right, I should wait until the machine is released!

I'd like to thank everyone for their very informative replies!

.1 gram at 1" with concentric coil, Ace 250. Good info. That's what I'm looking for! Were these bench tests or in the field? Either way a good result. Of course, the concentric coil may have noise issues in hot ground, but it might be workable in light to moderate ground. Gold finds with the ACE are intriguing. Is it true that the Ace 250 has an autotune but no ground balance? The AT PRO will have standard and pro search modes, as well as 4 other modes. That should be interesting.
When the ATPRO is released I propose a test. An ACE 250 should follow the AT everywhere and check every target signal that the AT receives. Wouldn't it be something if the Ace 250 could find every target that the AT PRO could find? Everyone could prospect with Aces for half the price of the AT PRO! I don't think the dealers or manufacturers would encourage this idea! I wouldn't try the test in real hot ground, however.
There are other ways to find gold. Lovely Rogers' mule is credited with finding the blue lode in Kern County, CA. The potato patch was located in central AZ by prospectors chasing wandering burros! The acclaimed "Joe no shoulders patch" was found by an Arizona prospector who followed a rattlesnake! This was a good way to randomize his search.
If metal detection doesn't work, maybe I'll follow burro tracks near Oatman. Who knows? I could find a gold ledge!

so I think it is ok to compare it to a dedicated machine... All still means all, and Pro still means pro.

I hope it is as good as some think say it is... it will make my day for sure. If it is All Terrain it should work well in Florida and in Tennessee and in Virginia and in Oregon. It should hunt whatever is hunted at those places and do it well if it is a Pro.

I realize it is all conjecture at this point, well mostly.. there are some vids and some hype... but maybe it isn't hype... maybe it is ground breaking new technology that will excell at hunting, gold, coins, and relics in any ground and then go into the saltwater and find rings in the surf... it will be a sure winner. If it is what it claims to be... I will want one.

One thing is certain, it will either take off like a rocket or it will fizzle out. The competition in that price range is pretty stiff... but I expect the AT-Pro will be exceptional. I have no reason to doubt it's ability however I will wait for some user feedback... I have too many machines already but I intend to have a waterproof machine by next summer so I am interested in the AT doing well.

Salt water is not terrain?

Not slamming just don't understand...

I imagine Garrett's will add a salt compensate setting if it is needed. The only thing I thought of when I heard "Waterproof to 10 ft" was the BEACH... I hope it will work in saltwater.

Agreed. And considering 97% of the earth's water is salt water Garrett's statement that the AT PRO supports "shallow water searching" would seem applicable to both fresh water and salt water (unless they specifically stated otherwise). If it turns out that saltwater is a big "NO GO" for the AT PRO I think there will be some disappointment.

Yeh it was air test....I did same test in very hot ground with 250 and it would not detect it. (.1 gram nug) The Scorpion did however.

The Ace has all metal, but the AT does not, although it has a zero mode. Since the Scorpion is still being made, I wonder if the AT can outdo it for prospecting without a true all metal mode? Does anyone know when it's being released?

For a discussion of the use of threshold for finding gold deposits, try "AT Pro doesn't have all metal mode. Has zero mode instead" on this Garrett Forum. The info is from the Garrett Scorpion manual!

The Ace has an all metal mode but it could be confused with all metal auto tune or true all metal. I think the better term is zero discrimination. I think this is even why the updated Ace 350 has a zero mode instead of the all metal mode. Discriminate zero mode is not the same as true all metal mode. Zero mode still has some discrimination while true all metal does not and is usually a non motion detection mode. But no one really knows just what the ATpro will do on tiny gold in the Pro Audio mode set at zero discrimination?

They didn't add a ground balance to the Ace 350, did they? I understand that the ground balance was preset and not adjustable on the 250.

Can the newer zero DISC mode on the Ace 350 outperform the all metal mode on the Ace 250? Any results in from the field?
