Garrett Ace 250 or Tesoro Silver Umax

Hello all, I am new to metal detecting and I don't have a whole lot of money to spend on a detector. I know this a Pro-Garrett Forum, but honest opions would be greatly appreaciated. I've narrowed it down to either a Garrett Ace 250 or a Tesoro Silver Umax. I've heard good things about both, and not much negativity of either, which is making the decision a little harder. Any advice, opinions or concerns would be greatly appreaciated. Thank you. Tim

If it helps. Garrett help and service is BAR NONE! Head and heels above Tesoro. Good luck with whatever choice you make. I could go on and on about the Ace 250 but I'll let others do that. You might consider that the Ace 250 is the best selling metal detector in the world and has been for several years. For good reasons. HH JackinAustin

Tesoro is a very good brand. But my choice would be the ace 250. With all the possibilities and features you can't go wrong. Above all.. its a fun machine to use.

Eric.

I have both and love both. The main decision of which to use is the type of site I'm hunting. Unfortunately (?) quite a few of the areas that are fertile with coins and rings are also overabundant in pulltabs and trash. The Ace and the sniper coil have turned my hunting world upside down by tripling the amount of finds for my situation. I DO have some schools and parks that are low trash and the Silver is my favorite-especially since I am too lazy and dogmatic to take off the sniper coil so I can search these areas in a timely manner. The Ace gives you more options, as you can also use it as a beep-dig machine. But I would NEVER get rid of my Silver.

Both are absolutely super machines for the price.:detecting:Both are really super companies.:garrett::biggrin::tesoro:
True, this being the Garrett forum, you will get a biased opinion. However, in all honesty I can tell you that the Garrett Ace 250 has so many more features and capabilities. It is a much more versatile machine.
Here are some links to reviews and field test reports for both models to help you decide which machine is best for you.

Best of luck to ya whichever detector you decide to get.:biggrin:Happy Hunting!:)

I've owned and used Tesoros since they first came out nearly 30 years ago and they are good machines but go with the 250. You'll be much happier.

Bill

I"m not knocking the Tesoro, but read the reviews and that tells all.
Go with the Ace 250. I did, and I don't look back.

Happy Hunting

I really like my ACE but i've also heard that a silver with a large coil is a great combo.

I had a Tesoro briefly and then returned it.
I like the way the Ace 250 pin points with the VCO pin poointing. Most Tesoros don't have this feature.
Also the Ace is more flexable in the different modes of operation; it has five modes to select from.
The Tesoro is a liked by many people but in my opinion the Ace is better constructed and is almost
problem free. I've had mine for 3 1/2 years and no problems ever. You also have a varity of different
coils for the Ave. DON'T BUY THE ACE 150. Your wasteing your money. Spend the extra $50 and get
the whole package.
