Hello to all,i am New to the site and nice to meet u all,i have a Garrett 2500 (2007 model),got it out and have been using it but i Believe i got mayb some problems mayb not,,,i took it to a Lake where they swim to try my luck out, well ever time i got near the ground it overloaded, there was alot of black sand and the bank was moist,i got it home and started testing it,it will overload on a 50-cent piece if i hold it right on top of it,if i lift off it works fine??? i have reset to factory programs and using Dis/coins mod. im new to the 2500 so is it me? how do i metal detect the lake area with all that black sand? Thanks so much eric

Hi Eric. Are you in Oz?
What you are talking about seems to be normal with the 50c piece. You can use that overload to help you identify targets like the 50c piece. Screw caps overload if close to the coil as well. he goldies can but almost have to be touching the coil to cause an overload signal.
As far as the black sand goes, I'm not that familiar with it. If it's wet, it'll cause a problem to most detectors. try putting it into the beach mode and see how how that goes. It's designed to deal with those situations.

If I get an overload signal and a tone, I dig because sometimes there is a coin next to a can or other object. I'm dangerous to aluminum drink cans, tho. Can Killer, that's me. lol. Isn't black sand associated with gold or other minerals?

You'll have to use all metal and ground balance it for the black sand.just as you would if you were nuggetshooting.

Hello Mike and all who posted, mike Oz? where is that? im in NC,im getting better with the 2500 but it does NOT like black sand,i will half to try All metal like Bill says and see if that will work,if not im going to check into the Minelab E-trac,i have a Gold Bug 2 and it does great in the Black sand BUT no target ID,so u get to dig alot of Trash,Thats why i got the 2500,i really like the 2500,im going to get my son and father a Ace 250 in a few weeks. Thanks for everones time to help me on this eric

I've reported on this before. With respect to the larger coil; Even in areas which aren't highly mineralized, it is almost impossible to ground balance. Yet, the smaller coil easily balances. On large targets, the large coil often overloads, and locks up the unit requiring a reset. Further, no matter the soil type, the large coil needs to be dialed back to the point, it is no more effective depth wise, than the smaller coil.

I will give the 2500 credit, however. Once you get used to it, it's easy to tell the difference between a clad, and copper penny. Same goes for a dime, and quarter (haven't found a half with it yet).
