I wish I had known about metal detecting when I was your age. You have a great opportunity to spend time with your Dad and who knows what you may find and you're young enough to go at it full blast. I lived in Denver, Colorado in 1969-1970 and had a great job for a teenager and that area was wonderful for metal detecting and gold prospecting. Guess all I ever did was work. You have to have some play time to enjoy living, because all work and no play makes life dull. Congratulations.
I saw people metal detecting at the beaches when I lived in Florida back in the 80's, but thought they were just bored old folks trying to stay occupied and did not get my detector until age 54. You're off to a great start and many adventures are waiting for you and your Dad.
By the way, I threw away a lot of belt buckles when I first got started. Make sure they are not valuable buckles or you're throwing money away.
