Fun Afternoon Hunt

My hunting partner, Jerry Clemons got permission for us to hunt his brother’s yard. The house was built in 1923. Big yard that is full of clover. Slowed us down some but we still had a nice afternoon hunting. It was a nice rewarding afternoon. I ended up with (3) old wheats. I found a nice piece of old jewelry & my favorite find was a military button. After researching it, I believe it is an old civil war button. One penny has me really studying it. It is hard to read the date but I believe it is a 1914 D. Jerry found a couple of wheats, jewelry pendant & couple of tootsie cars. Great afternoon!

That civil war general service button is a very nice find. Good work.

Nice finds. Buttons are my favorite relic to find. I believe your button pre-dates the civil war. The raised mark in a depressed channel was used on one of the first buttons to come our after they were changed in 1854. Prior to 1854 enlisted buttons had a letter in the shield denoting the branch of service. in 1854 all enlisted buttons were the same as used for the infantry, omitting the I in the shield. Your button may very well have seen CW use.

When you guys hunt together do you ever just mark your find first and then have the other guy swing his detector over it to compare readings before you dig?
We like doing that, you can learn a lot that way.

Yes sometimes if we question a signal, we will call the other over to scan it. Learn from each other. Both of us are using the Equinox 800 for yard hunting. My friend has more experience with the Nox. I’ve only taken my Nox 800 out on 4 hunts. Pretty easy machine to figure out though if you’ve metal detected for a while.
