Found cannonball is this a exploding cannonball

I found a cannonball in the woods it measure 12 inches around so it's a 12 pounder. It has something that looks like a stamp but similar ones online say they can explode. Any help is appreciated

I'm the wrong guy to ask.
I'd throw it in a 5 ft deep fire pit and find out.
Actually. Looks like a fuze.
I'd find someone with that rare knowledge I don't have.

I found these pics on the net ,, these may not be exactly like yours ,, and I am not experienced in CW cannonballs ,,but have heard ,, if they have marks similar to yours ,, it could be a fuse hole . It's best to find an expert ,, and be very careful handling it.
I remember a few yrs back ,, a guy in Virginia would defuse them balls for different folks ,, he was pretty much pretty highly respected in cannonballs and defusing them . Was recommended by many as the go to guy to defuse them things
One day ,, after defusing hundreds of them over the yrs ,, he had one one day that didn't go as planned ,, he lived in a neighborhood,, and was working on it in his driveway,, and it exploded .

I remember this too. A real shame. This gentleman had defused many of these artillery shells over the years, and this one time something went terribly wrong. They said this exploding she'll sent a piece of iron shell frag spiraling through the front door of a home a 1/4 of a mile away.

I too remember reading about this as I think it did a lot of damage to the whole block plus if i remember right lot of broken window in a 2 block area.. The guy was dead what they could find of him, sot they are nothing to mess with and been told if a person finds one not to touch it and connect the law and a bomb squad to take care of it. They have the equipment to handle it and usually have a area they will blow it up so no one gets hurt.
Better to be safe than dead.

There was some videos of a gentleman I believe from Alabama who had video's showing his set up for defusing live CW artillery shells. He had a bomb proof building set up constructed of cinder blocks well into his property. He had a stand set up with a cradle to hold the shells in place with the fuse pointing upward. He had a pretty elaborate drill press in place with a lever and a long rope lanyard attached to the lever. He had a water hose in place that would wet the shells fuse as the drill press began to drill the fuse out. This was done slowly and articulate. The rope was of course played out of the building a good distance away. The press would be turned on and he would go outside and slowly pull the rope engaging the drill press into the fuse until drilling was complete. This was pretty interesting if you can find it on tube.

Sure looks like that may be a fuse.
I am no expert either…. Be careful with it!!
I remember reading about that incident others mentioned.. the man lived South of a Richmond near Chesterfield, Va. I believe.
He had been doing this for many years and had a great collection of shells from
what I read.

He didn’t use a remote drill he was drilling it right in front himself with a drill. Knew him bought stuff from him at shows . He was in Wayne Aldridge’s shop a lot that’s where I met him. Very sad they say he wasn’t as careful as he should have been.
