Found a Colonial whats-it...

Shayne

New member
In addition to the 1773 VA Half Penny that I found the other day, I also found this little guy at the same site - definitely colonial. It is either bronze or brass, about 2 1/2 inches tall and very heavy - 25.2 grams. Wish I new who the figure was intended to represent. Oh well, there is the mystery that lures us all to this hobby....

Kinda looks like shakespeare.

Based upon my location - 30 Minutes from Jamestown, VA - it could be Christopher Columbus. Below is an internet photo of a bronze Columbus - has a cape and a beard - maybe that's a map that my figure is carrying? The patina on my find has the same characteristic color of bronze. There is also a nice shiny gold colored bald spot on the top of its head. Is there a way to conclusively determine if it is brass or bronze? Perhaps we'll never know...

looks like one of the local 'boys"
walkin' home from the inn!..if ya notice,he's leanin' a little
towards sawyers..outrageous find!..just sayin'

DO NOT CLEAN

I dabble with Antiques and know better

It is most certainly Bronze and may have been gilded with 24K Gold

Bring it to an Antique shop and they will possible know what you need to do to maintain it and enhance it without ruining the patina

I believe you could be right about Christopher Columbus but some research about the time it may have been created can help loads

The Antique shop personnel may be able to date it for you

Either way It is AMAZING

Congrats and Good Luck

That is a really awesome find. I am thinking with it being found in Virginia, could it be John Smith? I found a picture of a statue that looks similar. what do y'all think? HH

John Smith is very possible. I'll drop by one of our local Coin/Civil War/Relic shops this week and see if they can help ID it. If so, I'll be sure to post the news.
