I was contacted a few weeks ago by an old coworker. He wanted to know if I could look for a friend's coin. Apparently, he and his daughter buried it 32 years ago when she was a toddler. He did not remember what type of coin they buried. It was just whatever he had in his pocket. He had a general location of 75 feet long by 2 feet wide. I said I would give it a try. He was willing to give me gas money. After talking back and forth for a few days we decided on a day to meet up.
We met, parked our vehicles and walked up the road to the possible location. He marked 2 spots with his heel in the dirt about 50 feet apart. I started swinging away. I had no idea what type of coin I was looking for. I only knew that he claimed to have buried it 6" down. I dug up 3 aluminum beer caps and was starting to lose hope. I got to the first heel mark he made and got a solid signal. It looked to be around 6 inches down. I dug out a 1974 memorial penny laying perfectly flat 6 inches down.
Now, in some towns this might be perfectly normal to find a coin on the side of the road. This however is a very rural Maine town. 2 lane crumbling asphalt roads. Almost zero edge of roadway to walk without risking getting hit by a vehicle. That coin had no business being where it was, unless it was intentionally buried there.
Look up Corea, ME. Very beautiful lobster village.
They were very gracious! He plans on making the coin into a pendant for her. I had them stand at the spot it was dug for a photo.
I don't expect to forget this opportunity.
Thanks for reading.
