For those who use both Excalibur and PI units

I've got the Xsis Diver which is very similar to the Aquasound but I would say a bit deeper again as long as its not a black sand.
The SS is the cheaper base model of Eric's range so its great value for money (cost v depth) and the Minelab P.I.'s I always found better on land than the wet sand.
I'll be trying the new GPX4000 next week . It will be interesting to see if its any improvement over the older Minelab P.I.'s

G'day Brian,

I haven't heard of the Xsis diver. All I know is the latest Aquasound's with the 2007 "Orca" circuit boards are much improved on the previous generation of Aquasound's and MAC 1 detectors. It's the first time I've ever had a detector that matched it's depth reputation. My beaches down here in Perth are generally postcard white beaches so the Aquasound can run at max power. Beautifully engineered machine and a very stable threshold if tuned and balanced correctly which is easy to do...loves gold especially which is all I'm after generally. Do you get in the water much.....I swam at a beach in Cornwall some years ago on a hot summer's day but the water temp to me was painfully cold...the locals say it was the warmest they had experienced for some time...the result was....:surprised::stretcher:

I have worked for the Fisher's and the Aquapulse is the detector that we used exclusively. Mel Fisher hired the person that invented this detector and he produced it just for Mel. For a while it was not marketed to the public. Depth can not be touched by any other detector on the market today.

With a minumum pulse delay of about 30uS it will not find rings at more than several inches...it is designed for much larger items hence the longer delay which balances out seawater when diving (it's main purpose). No good for the typical beach and shallow water hunter.

That unit was designed for diving. It was designed & built by Eric Foster before he handed it off to other manufacture.

Eric and Mel Fisher were partners in the metal detecting manufacturing business, and at one time had a factory in Ireland. Eric's designed PI's were used in the discovery of the Atocha.

Based on what I've heard everyone say, if I had the money go with the AquaSearch. After that, the PI Pro seems to be the favorite.

There does not seem to be many fans of my initial choice of the Infinium LS.

In the mean time, one of my detectors has sold that I was going to use the money to buy the PI with and one is still on consignment. This has give me time to hear these responses and to assess exactly what I will be using them for. I've also been fresh water hunting the lakes near my home and know more about what I need here.

I now feel like I might need a good VLF backup for the Excal and the PI unit for saltwater. I could get the PI Pro and say the 1280X, Tiger Shark, or Beach Hunter ID, and still spend the same as I would for the Infinium.

But as for my original post, I think I'll go with the PI Pro. I am a little timid about doing so because I'm pretty sure White's is coming out with a new PI unit within the next 3 months. I don't know if it will be a water machine though.

Thanks again for all your help!

that the Whites is supposed to be announced on or around July 4th. So if you have decided on a PI you might want to hold off for a month and see if it's going to be a waterproof unit or a land only unit. Since it will be thier newest PI it should also be thier best PI...at least that's what I would hope. I doubt it will be a step backward. JMHO

It has a lot going for it once you learn a few simple tricks to make it behave in the saltwater. A hunting buddy of mine uses the LS and has had excellent results with it, very good depth and a limited amount of discrimination to iron which is more than can be said for other PI's. I've used it a couple of times and have considered getting one even though I have had nothing but good luck with my Excal 1000. The one thing that has held me back is the annoying sounds the Infinium makes when it's operating. You should try one out at a dealer and see if you like it before closing the book on the Infinium.

The first one released will be a relic PI machine is my understanding, but the 2nd one is supposed to be released in August and would be one major top of the line detector.

Of course, time will tell about how good of detectors they are. I am always hoping that they are "that good". If it is and it can be used in water, then I'll be happy.

I've actually been saving up for that White's unit whenever it is released and regardless of what I buy now. The funds for what I buy now will come from the sale of two detectors. One has already sold and I'm waiting on the next one. May have to drop the price a little, but it will sell.

I've been hearing about the new top end Whites for over a year now. Again, I hope it don't dissappoint.

This one is by Jimmy Sierra and it appears it was designed from the bottom up to be a propecting PI but will function well beach and relic hunting.

I guess the question is whether you can get in the water with it.
